Courtenay man dies after suffering serious head injury from assault

Police and family members have confirmed that a man who suffered serious injuries from an assault in downtown Courtenay has died.

The 46-year-old man was found unconscious on a sidewalk in the 350-block of 6th Street on Tuesday, November 19th.

According to RCMP, the man was at the Vancouver Island Regional Library with the suspect before the two got into an altercation that resulted in the victim sustaining a serious head injury.

Police believe that this was not a random incident and have identified a person of interest.

“This is a busy area in Courtenay and we are looking for witnesses who may have seen the dispute between these two men, a disturbance at the library, or may have video or dashcam footage from around the time of the assault,” said S/Sgt. Glen Breckon.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321 and refer to file 2019-17839.
