BC health officials report 2,137 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, January 28th

The BC Ministry of Health reported 2,137 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, January 28th. 

There have been 321,043 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

New cases were reported in these health regions:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 394
  • Fraser Health: 740
  • Island Health: 264
  • Interior Health: 569
  • Northern Health: 170
  • Residents outside Canada: 0

There are currently 30,515 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

286,134 people who tested positive have recovered.

There are now a total of 990 people in hospital due to COVID-19, 141 of whom are in critical care — ICU or acute care units.

Nine new people have died from COVID-related causes, making the provincial death toll 2,597.

Island Health

Island Health has confirmed that they have discontinued updating their dashboard, which contained breakdowns of active cases by region on Vancouver Island.

Outbreaks

There have been seven new healthcare facility outbreaks at Residence at Clayton Heights (Fraser Health), Cottonwoods Care Centre (Interior Health), Nanaimo Regional General Hospital – fourth floor, Woodgrove Manor, Amica on the Gorge, The Gardens at Qualicum Beach and Cowichan District Hospital (Island Health).

The outbreaks at Burnaby Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Hilton Villa Seniors Community, The Mayfair Senior Living + Care, Baillie House, Lakeshore Care Centre, Bevan Lodge, St. Michael’s Centre (Fraser Health), Sunrise of Victoria and Amica Douglas House (Island Health) have been declared over.

There are a total of 58 ongoing health care outbreaks in the province.

There are currently 24 health care outbreaks in the Island Health region.

Vaccinations

As of Friday, January 28th:

  • 10,640,763 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in BC.
  • 92.7% of eligible people 12 and older in BC have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 90.0% have received their second dose.
  • 93.0% of all eligible adults in BC have received their first dose, and 90.5% have received their second dose.
