Elderly couple assaulted after confronting man starting grass fire in Victoria

One person was arrested after they assaulted an elderly couple who confronted them for attempting to start a grass fire near downtown Victoria.

Just after 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26th, a 67-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man were assaulted in the 1300-block of Fort Street.

According to information released by VicPD, the two victims were allegedly assaulted after approaching a man who was in the act of lighting grass on fire in front of an apartment building.

The suspect, who has not been identified, reportedly struck the 67-year-old woman in the face and pushed the 66-year-old man when they confronted him. Additionally, the suspect attempted to strike a third person, but this attempt was unsuccessful.

Responding to the incident, officers apprehended the suspect on foot, a short distance away from the scene. He now faces charges of aggravated assault and assault and remains in custody until his scheduled court appearance.

The 67-year-old woman suffered potentially life-altering injuries. She was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The conditions of the other victims involved in the incident have not been released.

This unfortunate event took place amid concerns over the extreme dry conditions currently prevailing in the area. In addition, there has been concerns in the community after several suspicious fires were set in the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood.
