Two bikers have had their motorcycles impounded after they were allegedly caught speeding in Saanich last week.

On Friday, July 14th at around 10:30 p.m., a BC Highway Patrol officer was stationed on the Trans Canada Highway #1 southbound near the McKenzie overpass in Saanich.

The speed limit posted on this section of the highway is 80 km/h.

The officer reported having heard the roar of loud engines quickly approaching and documented their speed at 143 km/h — 63 km/h over the speed limit.

The KTM and Kawasaki motorcycles were pulled over and each driver was issued a violation ticket of $483 each for excessive speeding under the BC Motor Vehicle Act.

Additionally, each bike was impounded for one week — the drivers were responsible for associated towing and impoundment fees.

“We want motorcyclists to enjoy traveling on our beautiful island this summer, but we have seen a number of impoundments involving motorcycles due to excessive speed recently,” said Staff Sergeant Adam Tallboy, acting OIC of BCHP Vancouver Island.

“We would like to remind all road users including motorcyclists to please obey the posted speed limits so that we may all get to our destinations safely.”

As a part of the province-wide Summer Impaired Driving Enforcement Campaign, BC Highway Patrol officers warn that motorists can expect to see enhanced enforcement of dangerous driving behaviours throughout the month of July and beyond.
