A two-vehicle collision on a northern Vancouver Island highway between a semi-truck and an SUV ended with one fatality.

At around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday July 6th, a small SUV and a commercial semi-truck got into a head-on collision near Woss on Highway 19.

Police say that initial reports would indicate that the SUV veered into oncoming traffic and the semi could not slow down or swerve to avoid collision with the small vehicle.

The driver of the SUV was killed in the incident and the semi driver also sustained significant injuries.

“Sadly, the driver of the SUV did not survive the crash,” said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia.

“The driver of the semi truck was transported to hospital with serious injuries.”

Highway 19 was closed for several hours following the incident while a traffic reconstructionist conducted an investigation of the scene of the crash.

Port McNeill RCMP’s investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information, including dash camera video footage in the area prior to the collision is asked to contact Port McNeill RCMP (250) 956-4441.
