A somber cloud has settled over the picturesque shores of Long Beach, situated between Tofino and Ucluelet, following a tragic incident that took place last week.

On August 9th, an adult male lost his life in what authorities have termed a “possible drowning” within the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

The incident has sparked an investigation by RCMP and the BC Coroners Service.

In an email statement, Parks Canada said staff at Pacific Rim National Park Reserve  provided first response until the BC Ambulance Service and RCMP arrived.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our hearts and thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim, and with those who responded to the incident,” it reads.

RCMP have confirmed the fatality of the surfer and said they were called to the parking lot at south beach access to Long Beach where EHS and Parks Canada were performing CPR on the man.

Police said the man was found in the water, unresponsive and pulled from the water by family.

The BC Coroner says it is investigating, but has not yet established a cause of death.

“As our investigation remains open I have no additional information to provide at this time,” said Ryan Panton, manager of communications for the BC Coroners Service.
