Kids and youth from kindergarten to Grade 12 all across BC are invited to participate in the ‘Democracy & Me Art Contest’—open from Monday, November 6th to Wednesday, January 31st.

The Democracy & Me Art Contest is meant to invite students to reflect on the importance of community, community involvement, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and democracy.

Contestants are asked to reflect on how their creative expression offers a unique medium to express one’s identity, culture, and connection to community—represented in the beauty and authenticity of art.

“This art contest provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the vibrancy of our democracy and further strengthen connections between our public institutions and young people in this province, while encouraging youth to express themselves through visual arts,” said Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia.

Entries will be accepted in the following three categories:

  • Kindergarten to Grade 4
  • Grades 5 to 8
  • Grades 9 to 12

Each group will be provided with their own contest question to help guide creative entries!

“I really look forward to reviewing the creative talent of young British Columbians and encourage youth to participate in this opportunity to discover and reflect on the importance of their participation in community and democracy,” said the Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

“I am always impressed with the imagination of our youngest citizens.”

Each category will have a winner, and the selected entries will be displayed in the Parliament Buildings. Each winner will also receive a trip to Victoria—included will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the Parliament Buildings and an opportunity to meet with the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker.

The winners are chosen by the judging panel, composed of Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, and the Honourable Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.
