Esquimalt’s only pub ‘Saxe Point Public House’ releases new details on opening

Esquimalt will finally regain a watering hole after two years of a publess existence—following the closure of the historic Gorge Pointe Pub.

Two weeks ago, it was announced that a new pub would be coming to the Esquimalt Town Square in the coming year right next to the library and Esquimalt Roasting Company.

The 2,930 square foot space in the Town Square’s corner unit will be taken over by an up-and-comer of the local food scene, Demian Merino.

The Saxe Point Public House will be his first solo enterprise as a business owner.

“The creation of the Saxe Point Public House will and to the vitality of Esquimalt’s busy core,” Mayor Barbara Desjardins, Township of Esquimalt.

“The prime location at the Esquimalt Town Square makes the venue accessible by foot, car, bus and bike. I’m looking forward to seeing Demian’s vision come to life over the next few months.”

Merino was born and raised in Victoria and has been in the restaurant industry for the past 30 years.

He has experience in running two of Victoria’s most successful and iconic restaurants as general manager—Bard & Banker and Irish Times.

“We have listened to the needs of the community, and wanted to find a local operator who understood the Esquimalt Community, while also bringing their unique flare and perspective to this fantastic anchor retail location,” said Lenny Moy, President, Aragon Properties Ltd.

“With his vast experience in the local hospitality business, we felt that Demian would be a perfect fit.”

According to Merino, the Saxe Point Public House will aim to bring that neighbourhood pub feel to the Town Square.

The Saxe Point Public House is slated to open in late spring 2024.
