Former Victoria Grizzlies player named to Canada’s World Junior team

Vancouver Island’s anticipation for the upcoming 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden, has skyrocketed with the recent announcement of the 22 chosen players for Canada’s National Junior Team.

Among the roster stands a young talent with a familiar backstory, 18-year-old Matthew Wood, a former Victoria Grizzlies player, set to represent his nation on an international stage.

Following a rigorous selection process at the Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville, Hockey Canada unveiled its squad, comprising three goaltenders, seven defencemen, and 12 forwards.

The selection camp, which spanned four days and featured intense matchups against U SPORTS all-stars, served as the proving ground for these talented athletes, including Wood, who showcased his prowess and earned a coveted spot on the team.

Wood, a prolific winger for the University of Connecticut in the NCAA, has etched an impressive path in his hockey career.

The former Victoria Grizzlies player, who honed his skills during two impactful seasons from 2020 to 2022, has emerged as a rising star in collegiate hockey.

Known for his scoring ability and on-ice vision, Wood’s journey from the Grizzlies to the international stage reflects his dedication and determination to excel in the sport he loves.

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, but proudly bearing Nanaimo as his hometown on the Team Canada roster, Wood’s connection to Canadian hockey runs deep.

While known for his scoring ability and on-ice vision, his standout performances at the University of Connecticut, where he became the youngest player in college hockey and secured a spot on Hockey East’s All-Rookie team.
