Man who coerced Amanda Todd into suicide sentenced to six years by Dutch court

The man who harassed BC teen Amanda Todd to the point of suicide in 2012 has now been handed his sentence by Dutch courts.

Aydin Coban was sentenced earlier last year by the Supreme Court of British Columbia with an unprecedented 13-year sentence for the sextortion of Todd.

Now, an Amsterdam-based Dutch court has lowered his sentence to just six years.

Coban harassed and sexually extorted Todd on numerous social media platforms between November 2009 and February 2012, beginning when she was just 12-years-old.

Todd made a video and posted it online one month before she died by suicide and it was subsequently viewed millions of times across the globe.

This made Todd’s untimely and tragic death a prominent case which was closely followed by the media and eventually resulted in last year’s crackdown on sextortion laws in BC.

Coban threatened Todd through various malicious means and when she refused to meet his demands, he shared pornographic images of her with her friends, family and community.

The Dutch court says they converted the 13-year Canadian sentence to one of six years because that is the maximum number of years one can serve for this sort of crime.

According to court records, prosecutors sought out a sentence of just over four years, but it was deemed Coban should serve six due to the severity of his crimes.

Coban will be in jail for some time because he is already currently serving a sentence in the Netherlands for crimes of a similar nature in which he sextorted 33 young girls and men.

His six year sentence for Todd’s death will be served once his current time-served is completed.

The Dutch court records indicate Coban was born in 1978, making him either 44 or 45-years old.

Amanda Todd would have been 27-years-old if she were still alive today.
