Together, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the BC government and the Canadian Coast Guard are putting $86,119,340 toward 58 different environmental projects.

This funding comes as part of the second phase of the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund (BCSRIF) and is paid for 70% by the federal government and 30% by the Province.

With this money, numerous organizations will be funded to put more resources toward habitat protection and restoration to ensure the seafood sector of BC’s economy and the salmon themselves remain sustainable.

“Our government is committed to working with the Province of British Columbia to invest in programs that protect BC’s salmon populations and the fisheries they support,” said Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard.

“The project recipients being highlighted today are making significant progress in preserving and restoring salmon habitat while also providing long term, sustainable fisheries.”

“The BCSRIF continues to be a successful contribution program that utilizes innovative techniques to safeguard the future of Pacific salmon and other priority fish stocks for years to come,” she concluded.

UVic was one of the benefactors of this latest round of funding from the BCSRIF.

The university received $1.8 million for their work in assessing the prevalence of stormwater contaminants in salmon-bearing streams.

In addition to this, UVic also does work to identify opportunities for green infrastructure to be implemented in order to protect salmon populations from toxic road runoff contaminants.

The Scw’exmx First Nation’s tribal council received $5.3 million in funding as well.

They are doing work for the Post Flood Support for Fish and Fish Habitat Recovery in the Nicola Watershed project. This is taking place around Merritt.

There, the Scw’exmx tribal council’s aims to innovate flood recovery actions and offset the impacts of flooding on fish in the Fraser and Thompson Rivers.

The BC-based Pacific Salmon Foundation is also getting $2.4 million for their work in advancing salmon habitat restoration.

These are just a handful of the many projects receiving a piece of that $86,119,340 in funding.

Since the beginning of this initiative, 155 projects have received BCSRIF funding, and over $214.67 million has been directed towards these endeavours.
