Nanaimo RCMP are investigating a collision between a cyclist and a pick-up truck that left one person with serious injuries.

The collision occurred at around 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday January 30th, in the 700 block of Nicol Street.

The cyclist, a 43-year-old Nanaimo man, was injured and treated at the scene before being transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to police, he remains in the hospital.

Officers spoke with the driver, a 32-year old Nanaimo man, who was operating the pickup truck and remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Police have reportedly found no evidence of alcohol nor speeding to be a factor in the collision. It was determined that the cyclist rode out of a parking lot onto the roadway, where he was then struck by the pickup truck traveling southbound.

The cyclist was allegedly not wearing a helmet and road conditions were dry at the time of the collision.

RCMP closed the roadway for around 90 minutes to allow investigators to examine the scene and safely collect forensic evidence.

The investigation is ongoing and officers are asking if any motorists have eye witness evidence and/or dashcam footage to come forward and contact the non-emergency line at (250) 754-2345.
