Hatchet-wielding man in downtown Victoria disarmed by police beanbag gun

One man was shot with a beanbag gun before being taken into custody after a scary incident in downtown Victoria Tuesday night.

The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. on January 30th, in the 1200-block of Government Street.

VicPD said they received multiple calls about a man swinging a hatchet in close proximately to other people.

Witnesses told police the suspect was accompanied by two other men at the time.

Responding officers located the man nearby and when approached, he ignored commands from officers and allegedly pulled the hatchet out of his jacket.

As a result, police shot a less-lethal beanbag round at the suspect’s thigh and was then taken into custody.

“No injuries were sustained, but as is policy any time a less-lethal tool is deployed, the man was taken to hospital to be medically cleared,” said VicPD in a media release.

He was later released under the condition to appear at a future court date.
