Comox Valley RCMP warn residents of thieves allegedly targeting Asian-owned businesses

Share

Comox Valley RCMP have updated their warning to residents stating that they believe thieves are targeting the residences of Asian-owned businesses where high-value items are being stolen.

According to investigators, the properties being broken into are frequently being visited by the suspects prior to the intrusion to check if anyone is home.

“In the event that the suspects encounter the homeowner, they may mention that they are at the wrong house,” said Cst. Holly Carlson of the Comox Valley RCMP Major Crime Unit.

“We encourage homeowners to contact police right away if that happens”.

The three break-ins that Comox Valley RCMP are investigating that fall under the above criteria are:

  • February 24th, police responded to a break and enter in the 1100 block of Hornby Place, Courtenay, BC
  • February 28th, police responded to a break and enter in the 700 Block of Aspen Road, Comox, BC
  • March 1st, police responded to a break and enter in the 1700 Block of Thorpe Avenue, Courtenay, BC

These locations are all within a 15 minute drive of each other.

Police say these incidents are actively under investigation, including whether or not there is a connection between them.

Now, Comox Valley RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance reviewing CCTV video from these areas and reporting any suspicious activity they see.

Police are also providing advice to those who wish to better protect their homes against break-ins.

They say that while on vacation, it’s best to have someone to take care of the lawn and yard as well as park in the driveway.

Police also say it’s best to make sure your house number is visible during the day and night for fast emergency response, use timers on indoor lights and motion sensors on outdoor lights and install an overhead camera on your stoop or a doorbell camera.
