Another update has been released regarding a series of residential break-ins that initially started in the Comox Valley and have now extended into the Campbell River area.

Recent break-ins in Campbell River and the Comox Valley have prompted the Campbell River RCMP to issue a warning to residents.

Two incidents occurred in Campbell River, with similar occurrences reported in the Comox Valley, leading police to believe that a group of thieves may be targeting residences belonging to small business owners of Asian descent.

According to Constable Maury Tyre of Campbell River RMCP, the break-ins seem to occur when the homeowners are away at work.

Investigators suspect that an organized crime group might be placing GPS trackers on victims’ vehicles to monitor their movements. Additionally, in the Comox Valley, it’s been suggested that the thieves might scout the homes beforehand to check if anyone is present.

“In the event that the suspects encounter the homeowner, they may mention that they are at the wrong house,” said Cst. Holly Carlson of the Comox Valley RCMP.

The specific incidents under investigation in Campbell River include a break-in on March 6th, in the 600 block of Garden Way, and another on March 7th, in the 2100 block of Joanne Drive. Police said both sets of incidents are actively being investigated.

Residents in affected areas are encouraged to review security camera footage and report any suspicious activity or vehicles to the police.

On Wednesday, Comox Valley RCMP updated their warning to residents stating that they believe thieves are targeting the residences of Asian-owned businesses where high-value items are being stolen.

According to investigators, the properties being broken into are frequently being visited by the suspects prior to the intrusion to check if anyone is home.
