Police have identified the suspect of the fatal stabbing incident in downtown Victoria on Easter Sunday.

The suspect, Robert Henry Travers, who is in his 60s, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault against the second victim, who was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

At around 4 a.m. on March 31st, police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 700-block of Pandora Avenue, near Blanshard Street.

Officers arrived at the scene to find one man dead and another victim who was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Travers was taken into custody at the scene early Sunday.

The victim transported hospital was an employee of the Ocean Island Inn hostel. Her current condition is unknown.

Murder charges have yet to be laid, however, the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit continues to investigate the suspected homicide, which shut down the 700-block of Pandora Avenue for most of the day.

While VicPD were unable to confirm past incidents, online articles appear to show Travers was involved in other serious incidents in Halifax.

In 1984, Travers, 24 years old at the time, was tried three times for the attempted murder of a city policeman; however, he was found not guilty by the Nova Scotia Supreme Court. Instead, he was convicted of firing a gun with the intent to endanger a life.

Travers, who was injured by return fire, served 4 and a half years in prison for the lesser offense. The incident occurred outside the Halifax police detachment.

At the time of the incident, Travers was reported to be aggrieved by what he perceived as a wrongful conviction against him. He shouted “You’re going to die, pig” while firing his rifle, but missed the officer, who fired back.

Back to the incident on Pandora Avenue, details remain slim on what transpired and murder charges have yet to be laid.

Police would not release further details due to the ongoing investigation.
