On your mark, get set, go!

It’s that time of year when thousands of people of all ages hit the pavement to set their own personal best in the TC10k!

Dubbed as one of Victoria’s most popular running events, the 34th annual TC10K  is taking place this Sunday, April 30th, with athletes gearing up to hit the start line at 8 a.m. sharp.

Taking racers around downtown Victoria and Dallas Road, the TC10K kicks off at Government and Belleville streets near the Empress Hotel and the BC Legislature buildings.

Along with the race comes temporary road closures in downtown Victoria and surrounding areas. All intersections along the race route will be closed, roads within the race will remain open, however, motorists will have to cross with the direction of police officers.

This year’s route will head north on Government/Wharf to Yates, east on Yates, south on Cook, east on Richardson, south on Moss, east on May, south on Memorial to Dallas Road, then along Dallas to Erie, finishing back in front of the Legislature.

Below are the planned road closures for Saturday, April 29th and Sunday, April 30th:

These closures will remain in effect until 3 p.m. on Sunday. Some roads in the area will be opened earlier in the day as officers and race organizers work to limit traffic disruptions as much as possible while keeping participants and spectators safe.

The origins of the TC10K date back to 1990 when it was first held under the name “Garden City 10K”.

It wasn’t until 2000 when the Times Colonist stepped in as the title sponsor that the event officially became known as the TC10K.

The TC10K has become a popular community event that draws in runners, walkers, volunteers, schools, businesses, friends, families, and more.

Khalsa Day Parade

Sunday also sees the return of the Khalsa Day parade in Victoria’s Burnside Gorge neighbourhood.

The event is Vancouver Island’s largest Vaisakhi celebration and is taking place around the same time of the TCK10 and organizers are expecting to draw one of its biggest crowds yet.

The Khalsa parade will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 30th.

The parade route will proceed from Cecelia Road to Burnside Road, moving down Alpha Street, Douglas Street, Finlayson Street, and Jutland Road before returning to Cecelia Road.

The parade will stop for approximately 20 minutes on Finlayson Street between Douglas Street and Burnside Road for performances. The parade will conclude at 1:30 p.m., and the festival will continue at the Gurdwara Singh.

As in previous years, VicPD will be deploying temporary CCTV cameras to ensure that both events are safe.

“The deployment of these cameras is in keeping with both provincial and federal privacy laws,” said VicPD. “Temporary signs have been put up in the event areas to ensure that the public is aware, and the cameras will be taken down once the events have concluded.”
