The grand opening of the sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ James Bay Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library is this weekend!
The opening will take place on Saturday, May 26, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Formal remarks and a ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m.
The event will feature storytelling, activities, refreshments, and more.
The branch’s soft opening was a little over a month ago, giving folks plenty of time to practice the tricky-at-first pronunciation of its name.
Victoria City Council selected the name after a public consultation showed wide support for a First Nations name. sxʷeŋxʷəŋ təŋəxʷ is the Lekwungen name for James Bay.
In case you need a refresher, it’s pronounced ‘s-hweng hw-ung tongue-oo-hw.’ Still not sure? One library visitor can help you out.
