Salt Spring Island teenager identified in accidental shooting

The victim of an accidental shooting on Salt Spring Island this weekend has been identified.

Alistair Hayne, a 16-year-old student at Gulf Island Secondary School was accidentally shot on Sunday during a house party.

As family and friends mourn the loss of the young man, who’s remembered as funny, kind and accepting of others, a GoFundMe page has started to help out the Hayne family.

Salt Spring Island RCMP said they responded to a report that a shooting had occurred at a residence where six youths, including the victim, were present.

Hayne was transported to a Vancouver hospital where he died later that day.

Gulf Islands Secondary School advised parents and staff of the tragedy and added extra support for those affected by the incident.

A GoFundMe campaign started by friends has generated over $20,000 in just two days, with hundreds of people contributing and leaving supporting messages.

“As they grieve the loss of their son, and brother. To allow their process to be free of financial strain, at least for a little while,” the description of the GoFundMe reads.

“I love you, the boys love you. Burks and butcha loves you. Rest In Peace our brother aliman,” it reads.
