Many British Columbians want to host the Olympics after FIFA World Cup according to survey

Following the release of additional details about Vancouver being one of 16 cities to host FIFA World Cup 2026, a survey has been conducted to gauge British Columbians willingness to host similarly massive sporting events.

The survey was done by BC-based Research Co., who polled people from all over the province in different age ranges, races, genders and political affiliations to determine their opinions on these matters.

According to the survey, 68% of the province as a whole agrees with the now confirmed notion that Vancouver will host seven matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

That statistic is pretty much balanced across the different regions of BC and is highest in Metro Vancouver itself with 70% in agreement with the event taking over the city.

Of BC’s various ethnic groups, the South Asian community is the most excited with 85% of that community endorsing the event coming to Vancouver.

With the FIFA World Cup on its way in two short years, Research Co. was looking ahead to the future and asked the survey’s respondents what they thought of Vancouver placing a bid to host the Summer Olympics taking place in 2036.

In BC as a whole, 49%, just under half, say that they want the province to place a bid while 40% disagree and 11% say they are unsure.

Conversely, the BC government has already announced they will not be bidding to host the 2030 Winter Olympics that four local First Nations, the City of Vancouver and Whistler were vying for.

To this decision, 55% of BC said they thought it was a good idea to abandon the bid to host.

What do you think about BC hosting these events? Do you think it will benefit the province as a whole? Will those benefits be extended to Vancouver Island at all?

Let us know in the comments.
