BC health officials report 661 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, September 15th

The BC Ministry of Health reported 661 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, September 15th. 

There have been 176,480 cases of COVID-19 since the pandemic began.

New cases were reported in these health regions:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 99
  • Fraser Health: 237
  • Island Health: 66
  • Interior Health: 196
  • Northern Health: 62
  • Resident outside Canada: 1

There are currently 5,791 active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

168,459 people who tested positive have recovered.

There are now a total of 288 people in hospital due to COVID-19, 137 of whom are in critical care — ICU or acute care units.

7 new people have died from COVID-related causes, making the provincial death toll 1,873.

Data by Vaccination Status: 

From September 7th to 13th, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 76.5% of cases. From August 31st to September 13th, they accounted for 87.3% of hospitalizations.

Past week cases (Sept. 7-13):

  • Total: 4,935
  • Not vaccinated: 3,375 (68.4%)
  • Partially vaccinated: 400 (8.1%)
  • Fully vaccinated: 1,160 (23.5%)

Past two weeks cases hospitalized (Aug. 31-Sept. 13):

  • Total: 387
  • Not vaccinated: 316 (81.7%)
  • Partially vaccinated: 22 (5.7%)
  • Fully vaccinated: 49 (12.7%)

Past week, cases per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Sept. 7-13):

  • Not vaccinated: 321.9
  • Partially vaccinated: 100.3
  • Fully vaccinated: 29.6

Past two weeks, cases hospitalized per 100,000 population after adjusting for age (Aug. 31-Sept. 13):

  • Not vaccinated: 43.5
  • Partially vaccinated: 8.8
  • Fully vaccinated: 1.1

After factoring for age, people not vaccinated are 37.9 times more likely to be hospitalized than those fully vaccinated.

Outbreaks

There have been no new health-care facility outbreaks.

There are 24 active outbreaks, including:

  • Long-Term Care: Northcrest Care Centre, Menno Home, Westminster House (Fraser Health), Arbutus Care Centre, Louis Brier Home and Hospital, Opal by Element (Vancouver Coastal Health), Village at Mill Creek – second floor, Cottonwoods Care Centre, Brookhaven Care Centre, Spring Valley Care Centre, Kamloops Seniors Village, Hillside Village, The Hamlets at Westsyde, Joseph Creek Care Village (Interior Health), Sunset Lodge (Island Health) and Jubilee Lodge (Northern Health)
  • Acute Care: Chilliwack General Hospital (Fraser Health), Fort St. John Hospital (Northern Health) and Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (Interior Health)
  • Assisted or Independent Living: Nicola Meadows, David Lloyd Jones, Sun Pointe Village, Hardy View Lodge and Rose Woods Village (Interior Health)

Island Health:

Island Health reported 66 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Island region and  531 active cases.

Breakdown of cases on Vancouver Island:

  • South Vancouver Island  Active cases: 215 │Total Cases: 2991
  • Central Vancouver Island Active cases: 255 │ Total Cases: 3420
  • North Vancouver Island  Active cases: 61 │Total Cases: 1021

24 people remain in hospital with 15 in ICU. 

There have been two new deaths in the Island Health region today, and a total of 58 deaths on Vancouver Island.

Vaccinations

To date, 86.1% of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 78.6% have received their second dose.

In addition, 86.7% of all eligible adults in B.C. have received their first dose and 79.5% have received their second dose.

To date, 7,643,973 (+13,127) doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in BC; 3,644,716 (+6,312) of which are second doses.
