‘This was a serious assault’: 19-year-old man attacked with police-style baton in Saanich

The Saanich Police Major Crime Unit is currently seeking witnesses following a serious assault that took place at a bus stop over the weekend.

On Friday, July 14th, a 19-year-old man was attacked while waiting at a bus stop located at Majestic Avenue and Ash Road by suspects wielding a police-style baton and pepper spray.

The victim had recently left a gathering at the PKOLS (Mount Douglas Park) beach park area when the incident occurred.

Fortunately, the victim’s injuries, while serious, are not considered life-threatening.

According to reports, just before 11 p.m., the young man was walking to the bus stop alone when the assailants launched the attack.

Police located the baton in the vicinity, however, detectives are urging members of the public to come forward with more information, including descriptions of the suspects involved.

The area where the incident occurred has drawn police attention in the past, especially during the summer months, due to large gatherings on the beach—that later spill out into the streets—can sometimes lead to disorderly conduct on the streets.

As a result, Saanich Police said they have increased the amount of patrolling the area.

“Although Saanich Police were on scene quickly and have spoken with residents and other persons in the area at the time, it is believed there are pictures and recordings not yet shared with police that may afford evidence, and persons with information about this assault have yet to speak with Saanich Police,” said Cst. Markus Anastasiades.

“This was a serious assault and we know there are people that can assist us in this investigation.”

Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact Saanich Police at majorcrime@saanichpolice.ca and reference file 23-13080. You can also report what you know anonymously by contacting the Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
