Over the weekend, VicPD say they received a higher than normal amount of calls — one of which stood out due to it involving an explosion.

On Saturday, August 19th at around 8 a.m., police attended the scene of an assault in the 1900-block of Douglas Street.

According to VicPD, when they arrived, officers were informed there had been a small explosion outside the front doors of a downtown building.

Police say bystanders acted quickly and successfully extinguished the small fire.

After the flames were put out, the suspect assaulted one individual at the scene and fled on foot.

Police say they were able to identify and locate their assault suspect and they arrested him for assault and causing an explosion around 3:30 p.m.

Following this incident, at around 6 p.m., a VicPD officer was flagged down due to a small grass fire in the 600-block of Chatham Street.

Police say the officer was able to use a fire extinguisher in their car to put out the small grass fire and then proceeded to call Victoria Fire Department for backup.

According to VicPD, this officer was then informed of another small grass fire nearby and a man had been seen purposely lighting these small fires.

Police found the suspect and arrested him for arson.
