‘We are in a nightmare’: Donations being refunded after Campbell River man’s second stabbing

Share

Questions are being raised about the circumstances surrounding two separate stabbing events where a 21-year-old man from Campbell River was attacked twice within one month.

Now, the organizers of a fundraiser started to support his young fiance and child are offering refunds to donors, should they want their donation refunded.

The most recent event saw Colin Dube-Wheat stabbed again in the evening of Friday, July 28th in Campbell River.

Second stabbing

Police were called to a report of an attack at a residence in the 900-block of Cedar Street at around 7 p.m.

When they arrived on scene they found that Dube-Wheat had been stabbed numerous times by a 22-year-old assailant, just six days after his release from the hospital following his first attack.

Campbell River RCMP say that drugs are believed to be a factor in this altercation.

During the events that transpired and officers trying to apprehend the suspect in this stabbing, two constables were injured, resulting in both arresting officers, the suspect and the victim being taken to hospital.

The officers and suspect’s injuries were minor while Dube-Wheat’s injuries were more substantial, but all those involved are expected to survive, according to police.

First stabbing

In the first attack on Dube-Wheat, he was stabbed twice, once in the heart and once in the lung on Friday, July 14th.

According to the GoFundMe which was started to raise money for Dube-Wheat’s 2-year-old daughter and his fiancé, he had heard someone calling for help in the early hours of Friday morning and went to help them when he was attacked.

Following the second incident Dube-Wheat found himself in just two weeks after his first stabbing, some are questioning whether the story told in the GoFundMe is truthful.

Now, the fundraiser’s organizers have posted an update on the page offering refunds to those who want one.

The GoFundMe

On July 29th, organizer Jen Fyfe posted two updates to the fundraiser page to support Dube-Wheat’s family — the first was to thank donors and announce the original goal had been surpassed while the second was made when the circumstances surrounding the second stabbing came to light.

“We have been informed Colin was attacked again last night,” wrote Fyfe. “We are in shock and have so many questions that we hope will be answered by the police.”

“We also understand that many of you who have been supportive of Colin may be confused and are looking for answers. We are in a nightmare.”

“If you want a refund of your donation, we will 100% honour any refund request,” she added.

At the time of this publication, the GoFundMe stands at $23,583 raised.
