A hold and secure at Oak Bay High school has been lifted after police received reports of a man possibly with a gun in the area.

In a statement, Oak Bay Police said at 10:55 a.m. this morning, they responded to a report of a man sitting on a park bench in the 1700 block of Hampshire, twirling what appeared to be a possible handgun.

Police say that despite extensive patrols of the area, with GVERT assistance, the man could not be located.

Given the proximity to Oak Bay High School, the school was placed on a hold and secure for approximately 30 minutes while officers searched the area for the individual.

“Out of an abundance of caution Oak Bay Police requested a “hold and secure” on the Oak Bay High School and attached childcare facilities while the area was searched to locate the
person,” said a spokesperson with the Oak Bay Police detachment.

The person in question is described as a roughly 16-year-old Asian man with long black hair, a grey jacket, and light-colored pants.

“Bowker Creek Park and the surrounding areas were searched extensively by Oak Bay Police Officers and assisting members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team,
however the man was not located,” police said.

The school and a nearby daycare were released from the hold and secure once the surrounding area had been thoroughly searched.

There have been no further reports of this individual and the file remains under investigation.
