A young couple are being thanked by the Colwood Fire Department after they jumped in to assist a driver who’s car burst into flames Wednesday evening.

While the duo were not identified, their quick actions are being credited for averting a potential disaster.

In a social media post, the Colwood Fire Department extends its commendation to the proactive efforts of this young couple who, upon noticing a driver in distress on Island Hwy/Sooke Road, took immediate action just as the vehicle’s engine ignited.

They assisted the driver to safely exit the vehicle and maintained traffic control until emergency personnel arrived.

When the firefighters arrived, they were confronted with heavy smoke and active flames emanating from the front end of the vehicle.

Commuter traffic was impacted as RCMP had to temporarily shut down both westbound lanes on Island Hwy/Sooke Road to provide the firefighters with adequate space to safely combat the fire.

“The firefighters quickly knocked the fire down which allowed them to reposition the fire truck onto Goldstream Ave and re-open Westbound traffic on Island Hwy/Sooke Road,” read the statement on Facebook.

Goldstream Avenue remained totally closed for about an hour to allow for fire overhaul, removal of the vehicle, and clean-up of the scene.

There were no injuries or further damage to property as a result of this fire. The vehicle did sustain significant damage and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
