A pedestrian is lucky to be a alive today after nearly being struck by a vehicle not once but twice as they dared to jaywalk across a Nanaimo highway on a snow-covered day.

As captured by a dashcam in a heart-stopping video that recently surfaced on social media, Cassandra Watling was waiting to turn left onto 107th Street from the Island Highway when she captured the close call.

The scene unfolds in a bleak wintry setting, where visibility is diminished by snowfall. As vehicles cautiously navigate the slick roads, a lone figure suddenly appears amidst the swirling snowflakes.

A pedestrian, seemingly oblivious to the perilous situation, attempts to cross the busy highway.

The dashcam footage unfolds with a tense sequence of events at around 3 p.m. on January 8th.

Initially, a vehicle approaching from one direction swiftly brakes to avoid the pedestrian, barely missing them by a hair’s breadth.

As the video continues, a second vehicle, traveling from the opposite direction, also narrowly evades the pedestrian, who continues their hazardous journey across the icy road.

What makes this footage particularly harrowing is the dual threat faced by the pedestrian. The near-misses occur with vehicles hurtling towards the individual from both directions, highlighting the perilous consequences of jaywalking across a highway, especially in adverse weather conditions.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien, upon reviewing the video sent by Victoria Buzz, said “This is an excellent example of why there are crosswalks! This individual was inches away from becoming a statistic. It’s not worth the risk. Take the time and use designated crosswalks.”

With inclement weather still on the way, this video serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless pedestrian behavior and the critical importance of adhering to traffic regulations.

Jaywalking, particularly on busy thoroughfares, dramatically escalates the risk of life-threatening collisions, not only endangering pedestrians but also putting motorists and passengers at grave risk.
