If you’re a lover of art or have always meant to dive deeper into the subject, this is for you!

The popular Sunday Art Lecture Series will be returning to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) for its 10th year!

From February 4th to March 10th, participants will get together each Sunday for this year’s edition, Art History of the Now: Contemporary Western Canadian Art—exploring expressions of identity in contemporary Western Canadian Art and the influence of recent art movements.

The series is moderated by Globe and Mail arts writer Liam Lacey, and is held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the AGGV.

The first lecture is Modern Art Movements and the Expression of Identity with Dr. Betsy Tumasonis, who will be examining post-war art movements including Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Conceptual Art, and more and how it has influenced Canadian art.

Patricia Bovey will be presenting the second lecture, The Prominence of BC Women Artists: Insights & Impacts, leading listeners through the significance of the innovations, depth, and leading-edge impacts of BC women artists from the late 1800s to the present.

The third lecture in the series with Mark Loria, Contemporary Indigenous Art of Vancouver Island, will take a close look at the Indigenous art of Vancouver Island from 1965 to present, examining past and current artists from across the Island: Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Kwakwaka’wakw.

Professor Gu Xiong will discuss how his own migrant experiences of cultural clash have fueled dynamic change in both his personal life and his work as a contemporary artist in the fourth lecture, Artistic Electricity: Migrant Displacement and Rebirth.

The fifth and final lecture, Airport Architecture and Artworks in Western Canada and Beyond with Dr. Menno Hubregtse, will examine the connections of architectural design and the types of artworks in air terminal interiors with reference to themes of place, identity, and aviation.

This event is a fundraiser for the AGGV and funds raised go towards continued programming and exhibitions.

Tickets for this event are $30 per lecture, or $100 for all five. You can purchase tickets and learn more about each presentation here
