One day after an incident in which a man allegedly stabbed a cyclist outside VicPD’s headquarters, six charges have been laid against him.

The accused, Daniel Phelps, was caught and arrested after he reportedly slashed the cyclist at around 8 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23rd.

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries following the stabbing.

While investigators were making the arrest, it came to their attention that the same suspect they had taken into custody had allegedly broken into a downtown childcare centre and stolen an iPad-like tablet and pulled the fire alarm.

Police say the childcare centre was occupied at the time of the offence, but no children were in the vicinity of the accused during the time he was there.

Phelps now faces six charges, including mischief, theft, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, false alarm of fire and assault causing bodily harm.

“VicPD Detectives and the childcare facility managers continue to support the families and staff,” said a VicPD spokesperson in a media release.

Phelps now remains in VicPD’s custody awaiting a further court appearance.
