Suspect vehicle located after fatal hit-and-run in Courtenay

Investigators have identified a vehicle believed to be involved in a fatal hit-and-run near Courtenay on Thursday night.

Just before 11 p.m., on February 8th, a passerby discovered an injured cyclist on the Comox Valley Parkway near Minto Road and called 911 immediately.

Despite the best efforts of bystanders and paramedics, the man succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital.

The following day, police issued a public plea to help them identify car involved in the hit-and-run.

On Saturday afternoon, RCMP confirmed the vehicle had been identified.

“Investigators have located the suspect vehicle involved in the collision and are continuing to process the evidence collected so far,” RCMP said in a statement.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) have now taken over the investigation.

“While the investigation remains in its infancy, it is progressing well”, said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia.

“Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, no further details will be shared at this time”.

Investigators are still looking to speak with anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to contact the VIIMCU information line at 250-380-6211.
