Despite causing a huge smear on the city’s skyline, officials say the barge fire on the Selkirk waterway won’t be investigated further.
Battalion Chief Wayne Moody cited the “high risk/low reward” aspect of such an investigation. “The fire is going to remain classified as undetermined,” Moody told the Times Colonist on Saturday. “Most likely it was caused by probably a bit of residual fuel in a tank… But that’s just a guess — an educated guess on what’s happened historically there.”
The fire occurred near 2940 Jutland Road, and continued from 2:10 pm to around 4:30 pm.
Firefighters and coastguard worked in tandem to put out the blaze, using a boom around the boat to prevent contaminants from falling into the water.
One worker was also seen spraying a small hose from atop the barge, while the crane moved cars above him.
Last August, a similar barge collapsed in the Gorge Waterway.
