69-year-old driver killed in head-on crash with garbage truck in Parksville

A devastating two-vehicle collision occurred on Friday afternoon in Parksville, resulting in the tragic death of a 69-year-old local resident.

The incident unfolded on September 1st, at around 4 p.m., prompting an immediate response from the Oceanside RCMP, Parksville Fire Rescue, and the BC Ambulance Service.

The collision involved an SUV and a garbage truck at the intersection of Alberni Highway and Dunbar Way.

Tragically, the SUV’s driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the garbage truck emerged from the collision with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is being led by the Oceanside Municipal Traffic Unit, in collaboration with the RCMP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service and the BC Coroners Service.

According to Sergeant Shane Worth of the Oceanside RCMP, it is believed that the SUV crossed into the oncoming lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the garbage truck.

It is unclear at this time what lead up to the crash.

Investigators are now urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or possesses dashcam footage of the incident to contact the Oceanside RCMP, referencing police file number #2023-9457.
