A 16-year-old boy was arrested after allegedly starting a fire on a BC Ferries vessel last night.

On Tuesday, October 10th at around 8:30 p.m, Sidney/North Saanich RCMP were notified by BC Ferries about a fire that had been set in a washroom aboard a vessel, which was docked at the Swartz Bay ferry terminal.

According to police, they were able to board the vessel, arrest, and escort the teen off without any further incidents.

“The extent of the damage remains under investigation,” said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia.

“The youth was later released and is set to appear in court at a later date.”

In an email statement, Deborah Marshall, the Executive Director for BC Ferries, confirmed to Victoria Buzz the vessel was the Spirit of British Columbia.

Marshall also confirmed that it was the 7 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay where the incident occurred.

As a result of the fire, the 9 p.m. sailing was delayed by 35 minutes.

Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to call RCMP at (250) 656-3931.
