Teenagers rescue missing girl on hike after hearing calls for help in Highlands park

Last week, a young girl went on a hike with her grandmother but the two got separated and it wasn’t until two teenage good samaritans heard a call for help that she was found.

On Monday August 7th, West Shore RCMP received a call for help after a 14-year-old girl had become separated from her grandmother and mother while on a hike in Gowlland Tod Park.

Police came to the park and began to spread out in an effort to locate the young girl along with her very concerned grandmother and mother.

While they searched, police say that two other hikers in the park,18-year-old Gabe Kingston, and 17-year-old Kyle Hadley, heard a girl calling for help and urgently followed her voice until they located her.

Kingston and Hadley found the young girl stuck precariously on a steep and dangerous slope.

Kingstone then called police while Hadley carefully traversed the steep slope toward the lost girl to help guide her back to safety.

Police say she was unharmed in the ordeal and reunited with her family soon after the two teens found her.

“We had just taken up hiking and this was the first time Kyle and I had been on this particular trail. It was overall a pretty fortunate set of circumstances that led us there,” said Kingston.

“We are happy she is safe.”

Kingston and Hadley were both awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation by Superintendent Todd Preston, the officer in charge of West Shore RCMP.

“We want to recognize these young citizens, who heard a cry for help and acted quickly to get a fellow citizen to safety,” said Cpl. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP Media Relations Officer.
