The Canadian Premier League (CPL) announced on Wednesday that they have selected Charlottetown, PEI as the location for their 2020 season.
The season is being hosted in PEI’s provincial capital through a partnership between the CPL, league owners and players, and governments at the federal, provincial, and municipal level.
Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown said in a statement that the event will be a boost to the city’s economic prosperity.
“Hosting the CPL is sport tourism at its core and will drive much prosperity to our capital city,” said Brown.
“The Birthplace of Confederation is ready to welcome the CPL with open arms and wishes the League the best of luck with what is sure to be a memorable season.”
The season—dubbed the “Island Games”—kicks off on Thursday, August 13 and will feature all eight Canadian Premier League teams, including Victoria’s own Pacific FC.
The teams include:
- HFX Wanderers FC
- Atlético Ottawa
- York9 FC
- Forge FC
- Valour FC
- FC Edmonton
- Cavalry FC
- Pacific FC
All matches will be played at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Alumni Field.
While the stadium will not be open to the public during matches, fans will be able to tune in remotely through subscription streaming service OneSoccer.
The CPL says they will also be offering “virtual engagement opportunities” to give an insider scoop from the player and coach perspectives.
The Island Games will wrap up in September, with a detailed schedule announcement still to come.
