BC premier points to public transit amid rising cost of gas

With gas prices expected to rise even more, BC’s premier suggests drivers ditch the car keys and take the bus if costs become out of reach.

During a Friday press briefing, John Horgan pointed to public transit as a solution for motorists who can’t afford to fill up their tank at local service stations.

“In our urban centres, [we have] sophisticated public transit systems that are options if prices become too unaffordable in the short-term,” Horgan said.

When asked about reducing taxes or other costs to compensate for the cash being dished out at the pumps, Horgan said officials are “going to look at whatever tools we can to make life more affordable.”

His comments came as experts warned of gas prices across Canada jumping amid Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

On Thursday, gas price analyst Dan McTeague, who regularly shares data and predictions to his website GasWizard.ca, hinted that the country could see a hike of 8-9 cents per litre this weekend.

For BC’s capital, the anticipated jump comes after the city already saw a record-high this month – an unprecedented 179.9 cents per litre on February 16th.

“We’ve never seen this price for fuel in Victoria,” McTeague told Victoria Buzz during an interview last week.
