90-year-old Nanaimo woman killed in hit and run incident: RCMP

A tragic hit-and-run collision has resulted in the death of a 90-year-old Nanaimo woman.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, February 24th, in the 2800 block of Cedar Road near Bennie Road.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, a passing motorist discovered the victim lying unconscious on the roadway and promptly alerted emergency services.

Despite the response of bystanders who administered emergency first aid and the arrival of first responders, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The BC Coroners Service was subsequently notified and attended the scene to confirm the death.

The Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Services, alongside an RCMP Accident Collision Analyst, launched an investigation into the incident, which is being treated as a fatal hit-and-run involving a motor vehicle.

As part of the investigative process, the roadway was temporarily closed for approximately 4.5 hours to facilitate on-scene investigations and the collection of forensic evidence.

Investigators are now reaching out to the public for assistance in identifying the driver and vehicle responsible for the fatal collision.

They urge anyone who may have been in the vicinity of Cedar Road between 8 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 24th, to review their dash cam footage for any potentially relevant information.
