Two arrested after ‘grandparent scams’ in Saanich saw thousands of dollars stolen

Share

Two people are facing fraud charges, among others, after victims of so-called “grandparent scams” came forward to RCMP.

Earlier this week, police warned the public of an ongoing scam that saw three people duped over two days, resulting in over $20,000 being lost to fraudsters.

The scam has been dubbed the grandparent scam because it is usually targeted toward an older person

On Friday morning, Saanich Police police confirmed that investigators have made two arrests in connection with the scam that targeted individuals in Greater Victoria, and potentially other areas of Vancouver Island this week.

With assistance from Richmond RCMP, a 26-year-old man from Montreal and 24-year-old woman from Quebec City, Quebec were arrested on February 29th, at the Vancouver International Airport.

“Given the large financial losses from Saanich residents, and the high public interest,
Saanich Police Major Crime Detectives worked diligently to secure evidence, support
the victims, and ultimately locate the two suspects as soon as possible,” stated
Inspector Damian Kowalewich.

Both will be appearing in court this afternoon in Richmond and are each facing two counts of fraud.

Anyone who may have been targeted by the “Grandparent Scam” or variation should
contact Saanich Police or their local police agency.
