At least eight police cruisers and four fire trucks raced toward Victoria General Hospital (VGH) on Tuesday to put out multiple fires in close proximity.

On April 4th, not one, but two fires were believed to be intentionally started on the fourth floor of the VGH which houses patients.

The initial call came in at around 11 a.m. and fire crews from View Royal led the response with help from the Langford, Colwood, Esquimalt and Saanich fire departments.

“Island Health can confirm there was a small fire on the fourth floor (general medicine unit) at Victoria General Hospital yesterday,” said Andrew Leyne, Media Advisor for Island Health.

“Thanks to the quick actions of staff the situation was contained and the fire was extinguished with minimal damage.”

Leyne said that no patients were evacuated from the fourth floor or the hospital which remains fully operational.

First responders remained on scene and West Shore RCMP conducted a short investigation of the scene. Allegedly, a patient on the fourth floor set fire to a paper towel roll in at least one room which caused the alarm to be set off.

“We have investigated and are not anticipating any criminal charges at this time,” said Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer with West Shore RCMP.
