A driver with a history of impaired and dangerous driving was allegedly nabbed speeding excessively on Sooke Road in late April.

The motorist was caught by BC Highway Patrol travelling at more than twice the speed limit along Highway 14 between Langford and Sooke, where the posted limit is 80km/h.

The vehicle was alleged to have been moving at 163km/h.

On April 27th, at approximately 8:30 pm, a member of BC Highway Patrol – Capital Regional District – Integrated Road Safety Unit (BCHP-CRD-IRSU) was conducting speed enforcement on Sooke Road near the entrance to Sooke Hills Wilderness Park in Metchosin.

The officer saw a newer model Ford Mustang overtaking multiple vehicles and clocked the vehicle travelling at 163 km/h, over double the speed limit in the posted 80 km/h zone.

The officer stopped the vehicle and arrested the driver, a local man in his 40s, for dangerous driving under the Criminal Code of Canada.

The driver of the vehicle is known to police, having had prior convictions for both impaired driving and dangerous driving offences. The vehicle was also impounded.

“The manner in which this vehicle was being driven was inherently dangerous. There are homes and bus stops within close proximity to the highway, as well as fellow motorists who are trying to get to their destinations safely,” said Staff Sergeant Adam Tallboy, Acting OIC of BCHP Vancouver Island.

No details were released on how long the driver’s license would be suspended.
