Over 1,000 BC Hydro customers in Gulf Islands without power due to storm

A storm on the west coast knocked out power to over 1,000 BC Hydro customers in the Gulf Islands Wednesday morning.

The largest outages were on North Pender and Saturna Islands.

425 customers were affected west of Bosun Way and north of Schooner Way and 561 customers were affected east of Swartz Bay-Saturna Island Ferry Road.

A special weather advisory from Environment Canada remained in effect Tuesday morning for the Greater Victoria area.

Over the next two days rainfall amounts were estimated to reach 15 to 40 mm. West Vancouver Island was expected to see over 100 mm of rain.

Strong southeast winds were predicted for the west coast of the Island early Wednesday morning.

There was a risk of thunderstorms across the region Wednesday evening into Thursday.

Environment Canada said a combination of heavy rain with leaves on the ground could lead to localized flooding and strong winds could lead to power outages.

More rain was expected Friday and Saturday.
