The northern lights could be visible across Vancouver Island this weekend

(Brennan Stankoven)

On March 12, the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued a space-storm watch, which sounds alarming, but could actually have beautiful results.

Such a storm ususally coincides with occurances of the aurora borealis (i.e. the northern lights).

Although the geomagnetic storm was predicted to hit Earth on March 14 and 15, this weekend (March 17 and 18) will likely be the time to look up.

As it turns out, not all solar winds travel at the same speed. And when the faster winds catch up with slower winds, they “pile up”.

The result: a ribbon of particles with the potential for amazing natural nighttime beauty.

When coupled with the dark skies of Saturday’s New Moon, and the approach of the Spring Equinox, the timing is ripe for the northern lights to make an appearance.

Get prepared to watch the Northern Lights

Light pollution will spoil any view of the Northern Lights. The best option is to head north until you can see a healthy number of stars above your head.

Also, even if you are in a good position to see the aurora, it may still be quite faint, requiring a camera that can capture long exposures and some post-processing to really pick out the vibrant colours.

If you do capture an amazing photo, make sure to hashtag it with #victoriabuzz, or email us at tips@victoriabuzz.com.

Mount Washington welcomes Olympic gold medal hero Cassie Sharpe back home (VIDEO)

(Instagram/mountwashington)

It was a homecoming unlike anything Mount Washington has seen before.

Cassie Sharpe, who won Olympic gold in women’s ski halfpipe, returned to Vancouver Island this past Saturday to kick off their spring season and celebrate her incredible achievements.

The event gave locals the chance to meet the ski halfpipe star, get autographs, and join her on a well-deserved victory lap.

Mount Washington also offered a tribute to Sharpe, renaming their run “Go for gold” to “Cassie’s gold”, cementing her legacy on the mountain that raised her.

Sharpe was born in Comox, and at 11 years old discovered her love for skiing, with Mount Washington as her playground. Nearly 15 years later in her Olympic debut, she became Canada’s first Olympic medalist in the ski halfpipe, capturing gold.

Suspect arrested in case of home invasion, burning of stolen vehicle

Two kidnapping and robbery crimes are not believed to be connected: VicPD
(Victoria Police Department)

A suspect has been arrested and released on conditions pending charges as VicPD’s investigation into a home invasion, vehicle theft and vehicle fire in the 2900-block of Washington Avenue continues.

Timeline of Events:

Officers were first called to Topaz Avenue at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6th, for a report of a home invasion.

When they arrived they discovered that the two residents had suffered non-life threatening injuries and the suspects had fled.

A short time later at 10:20 a.m., officers were called to the 2900-block of Washington Avenue for the report of a car fire.

The vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta with a distinctive reflective sticker on the bumper, had been stolen between 11:00 p.m. on February 3rd and 10:30 a.m. on February 6th and believed to be utilized in the home invasion and subsequently burned.

Investigators from VicPD’s Major Crime Detective Division and Forensic Identification Unit worked to identify two suspects and were able to make an arrest. A second suspect is still outstanding.

Investigation Still Underway

Investigators are still looking for additional witnesses to come forward.

If you have any information about this incident, or observed the distinctive blue Volkswagen Jetta driving erratically on Finlayson Avenue or in the area of Blanshard and Finlayson streets between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m on Tuesday, February 6th, or in the days before the incident, you are asked to call Victoria Police’s non-emergency line at (250) 995-7654.

Broadcast coverage of two Victoria parades to undergo changes in 2018

Victoria Parades
Image: Terrance Lam Photography

The Island Farms Victoria Day Parade and the Island Farms Santa’s Lights Parade will look a little different in 2018, at least to those of us watching on screens.

In a release, the Greater Victoria Festival Society announced that they will be producing their own video coverage of the parades.

This coverage will be distributed digitally through several online channels including a web live stream.

All Rights Retained

As part of this action, the Festival Society will be retaining all digital/online production rights of their parade content including professional live streaming coverage on websites, mobile applications, or social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

The Festival Society will continue offering all traditional media organizations the opportunity to produce coverage of events and parades owned and produced by the Festival Society, provided they abide by certain conditions.

“As technology continues to evolve we are excited to embrace the opportunities that come with it,” the Society wrote.

“We believe that by doing so we can continue to produce enjoyable free entertainment for our local communities all while bringing that entertainment and joy to an even greater number of people for years to come.”

Stay tuned for more exicting news on the horizon!

Victoria High could be demolished

Victoria High School (hey.yyj/Instagram)

BC’s oldest high school is in for an upgrade, and according to the Greater Victoria School District, it will come in one of three forms: a seismic upgrade, a rebuilt interior, or a full-on demolition and rebuild.

The plans are necessitated by Victoria High’s H-1 seismic ranking, which puts the school at the highest level of priority need when it comes to protection against earthquakes.

Located at 1260 Grant Street, Vic High opened May 1, 1914, and currently has a capacity of 850 students. However, enrollment is projected to increase by over 1000 students over the next decade.

Already, there are around 300 students in the Vic High catchment area that the school can’t accommodate.

Open Houses and Online Survey for Public to Voice Opinions

Two open houses will be held in April to provide an opportunity for the community to learn more about the options and provide input about what’s important to them when planning for the future.

Further consultation with community stakeholders and an online survey will also occur in April. All input will be presented to the Board of Education before considering options.

“Vic High has been an important institution in our community for over 100 years, and it’s essential that we hear from our community before we make decisions about how to best support student learning for the next 100 years,” noted School Board Chair Edith Loring-Kuhanga.

“The Board of Education will consider all of the input received from stakeholders and community later this Spring.”

Range of Possibilities

In a release, the Greater Victoria School District listed the following three options, as well as their estimated costs:

Seismic with upgraded building systems

• $40 M (+ Reserve) = $60-70 Million Range

Retain the exterior and rebuild interior

• $74 M (+ Reserve) = $100-110 Million Range

New school for 1000 students

• $47 M (+ Reserve) = $50-60 Million Range

Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub featured in viral video for its glitter beer (VIDEO)

(Instagram/spinnakersbrewpub)

It’s like staring into a refreshing, delicious snow globe.

Glitter beer has been circulating the internet as of late, mesmerizing folks across the lands with its golden finish and swirling patterns.

Victoria’s own Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub has stamped its way into a few of those videos, representing BC’s capital and our love for craft beer.

Using edible glitter that is used primarily for extravagant cake making, breweries around the globe are now adding it to beer for a festive, celebratory feel. The fad is also creeping its way into St. Patrick’s Day traditions, with a few places offering glittery brews instead of the traditional green beer.

Though the Spinnakers beer featured in the video is actually from a few years ago, they will indeed have some glittery beer available for this St. Patty’s day. Their Skagit Pale Ale will be jazzed up and glittered, offering St. Patrick’s Day enthusiasts the opportunity to choose from the classic bright green brew, or a shiny, swirling pale ale.

Spike in vehicle break-ins prompts warning from Victoria Police

(File photo)

Victoria Police are warning the public of an increase in recent vehicle theft, particularly in parkades.

In 2016, 158 reported thefts were from vehicles in the downtown core, with 32 occurring in parkades. That means 20.2% of vehicle thefts were in parkades.

2017 statistics, however, tell a different tale. 441 reported vehicle thefts occurred in the downtown core, with 241 occurring in various parkades. Thus over half – 54.6% – of vehicle thefts were in a parkade in 2017, suggesting parkades are now being targeted by car thieves.

These trends present a stark contrast to 2016, as total thefts from vehicles has nearly tripled, while the percentage of theft from cars occuring in parkades has more than doubled.

Keep your valuables with you or out of sight

Officers, Reserve Constables, and volunteers have been proactively patrolling parkades as part of the Lock Out Auto Crime (LOAC) program.

Parkade patrollers regularly see valuable items such as money, laptops, smarthpones, and other electronics in plain view, and would like to remind folks that it puts a bulls-eye right on your vehicle for thiefs to target.

If you find a LOAC notice on your vehicle, it is a friendly reminder on how you can reduce the chance of theft from you vehicle.

If you have been the victim of theft, you can report it either online at http://vicpd.ca/reportcrimeonline or by telephone at 250-995-7654.

Celino Romero, who ushered in the third generation of the quartet, will be filling the First Church of Christ with his beautifully passionate music on March 24.

Over 50 Years of Classical Guitar

Established by Celino’s grandfather, father and uncles in their native Spain, Los Romeros have been performing together since 1960 for audiences worldwide.

They’ve performed for two American Presidents, Pope John Paul II, the King of Spain, and countless other dignitaries, prompting the New York Times to dub them “The Royal Family of the Guitar.”

In 2007, Los Romeros were granted The Recording Academy’s President’s Merit Award from the GRAMMYS in honor of their artistic achievements.

Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect on March 24th…

Honorary University of Victoria Doctorates

Although this will be Celino’s first solo Victoria performance, his family has a history of connections to the city.

In fact, Celino’s esteemed grandfather, Celedonio Romero, and uncle, Pepe Romero, both hold honorary doctorates from UVic.

In his first Victoria visit, Celino Romero will perform solo pieces and duos with UVic professor Alexander Dunn.

Royals set franchise record for goals in a season

The year of the franchise record continues, as the Royals have lit the goal lamp a record 284 times in the 2017-18 season. The record surpasses their previous mark of 283, set in the 2015-16 season.

It’s no surprise, really. The Royals have boasted the league’s second-best offence for just about the entire season, trailing only the league-leading Moose Jaw Warriors, and have a veteran-laden squad loaded with firepower. Victoria has exploded for 6 goals or more a remarkable 18 times through 70 games this season, once every four games.

Longtime Royals Matthew Phillips, Tyler Soy, and Dante Hannoun have combined for 107 goals (47, 36, and 24 respectively), about 38% of the team’s total offence.

Playoff packages now on sale – reserve your seat!

With the Royals’ seventh consecutive playoff appearance set in stone against the Vancouver Giants, now is the time to guarantee your seat throughout the entire Royals’ playoff run.

Victoria councillor pushes for horse-drawn carriage ban

Horse-drawn carriage
(Doug Clement Photography)

BC’s capital city is no stranger to horse-drawn-carriage-based controversy, but now pushback is coming from Victoria city council itself.

Councillor Ben Isitt voiced concerns at a recent council meeting about the use of horses in the city environment.

“If we are serious about animal welfare, these animals need to be in rural areas on farms, not working in the dense urban environment under these conditions,” Isitt said.

“I don’t think commercial horse-drawn carriage operations are an appropriate use of animals for commercial purposes and essentially for entertainment.”

The issue arose during a debate over identification numbers being used for horses pulling carriages (the motion ultimately passed).

Though Isitt voiced his concerns, he did not actually propose a motion or attempt to alter the bylaw.

History of Controversy

The Victoria Horse Alliance has advocated for an end to horse-drawn carriages in the city for years. In fact, a petition to ban the use of horses in the city that they started in 2016 has since garnered over 10,000 signatures.

But Donna Friedlander, the Tally-ho Carriage Tours in Victoria, has consistently denied that the horses are mistreated.

“When it comes to animal welfare, I think we do an amazing job,” Friedlander told CBC News.

Tally-ho reportedly utilizes a team of veterinarians, farriers, and chiropractors to care for the animals.

“The horses that we use are all draft horses or heavy horses. They’ve been bred for over 300 years to do exactly this kind of work,” Friedlander continued.

Email appears to confirm Costco’s plans to open up Saanich Peninsula location

Costco Saanich Peninsula
File Photo

A Victoria Buzz article posted on Tuesday revealing a potential North Saanich Costco location stirred up controversy and prompted denials, but an email from representatives of Costco Langford appears to confirm that a new warehouse is, in fact, in the works.

In an email on February 20th to PAC Presidents of School District 63, Sandi Danshin and Dave Hoover (Business and Membership Representative s of Costco Wholesale Langford) stated the following:

“Basically, we have been given a little creative license to host some special events to promote membership in preparation for our new warehouse to open on the Saanich Peninsula in about 1 1/2 years or so. Dave and I came up with this idea to support the schools and do something different.”

The email goes on to describe the details of a membership drive on March 10 and 11th.

Potential Location:

Costco Canada declined to comment on the potential new warehouse, but Victoria Buzz sources say that one could open up in North Saanich as soon as 2019.

The new Costco location would reportedly be located on Mills Road.

That land, however, is owned by the Victoria International Airport who leases it out to prospective businesses.

Geoff Dickson, President and CEO of the Victoria Airport Authority, denied that any talks with Costco regarding that area of land had taken place.

Galloping Goose Trail to temporarily detour this weekend

Galloping Goose
Galloping Goose Regional Trail (CRD)

The BC Government has issued a media release advising cyclists and pedestrians of a temporary detour along the Galloping Goose Trail, between Grange Road and Belgrave Road, over the weekend of March 17-18, 2018.

The detour is the result of ongoing work for the McKenzie interchange project and will allow rock-scaling operations to be completed, in preparation for retaining-wall construction and to reinforce the foundation of the pathway.

Work Must Be Done in Daylight

According to the release, due to the precise nature of scaling operations, work must be done in daylight, as opposed to overnight.

Signage along the trail has notified cyclists and pedestrians of the upcoming detour since Friday, March 9, 2018. The detour route will be posted and monitored by the contractor throughout the weekend.

Costco could start delivering groceries across Canada

Rumours of a new Vancouver Island Costco location have caused some serious buzz recently, but a new report by the Financial Post could have an even more far-reaching impact for future grocery shopping.

Reportedly, Costco’s success with online food delivery in the U.S. has prompted the company to explore a similar service in Canada.

The popular warehouse retailer began making online grocery deliveries of non-perishables to customers south of the border in October, 2017, and has expanded a partnership with Instacart to deliver fresh food.

“We are looking at sites from which we can fulfill fresh grocery orders,” confirmed Costco Canada spokesman Ron Damiani. “We are extremely happy with the results that we have had out of the U.S.”

More Convenient, But Not As Cheap

Though the move to home-delivery has been successful for Costco so far, its appeal seems to be more about ease-of-access for customers than about maintaining cheap prices.

In fact, for home delivery in the States, items tend to cost 15% – 17% more than they would in-store.

The delivery fees for the Canadian service remain to be seen.

Damiani also noted that Costco has no specific timeline for Canada’s home delivery rollout.

GoFundMe created to save 30-year-old Central Saanich bookstore

One of Brentwood Bay’s oldest legacies, Pages Used Books, needs our help to survive.

After 30 years of providing the community with thousands of stories, adventures, and memories, this Brentwood Bay bookstore is now at risk of becoming a relic of the past.

People in the neighbourhood who have grown up with Pages Used Books have set up a GoFundMe account to help its owner, Max, keep his life’s work alive.

UVic’s Ring Road will be temporarily closed Wednesday for student march

Justice, or Just Us? - Day of Action/UVic Student Walkout (Sarah Robinson/Facebook)

Ring Road will be closed temporarily on Wednesday, March 14th during a UVic student walkout and demonstration in front of the Faculty of Law.

The road will be closed to all traffic and buses from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm.

BC Transit said all bus stops on Ring Road will be closed during the event and buses will be detoured via Cedar Hill Cross Road, Gordon Head Road, McKenzie Avenue and Finnerty Road to and from the regular bus exchange.

Justice, or Just Us? – Day of Action/UVic Student Walkout

“Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island are reeling from the recent acquittals of Gerald Stanley and Raymond Cormier. The settler ‘justice’ system leaves ‘just us’ behind — to bury our children in vain, to bear the burden of institutional discrimination, and to count our missing and murdered women and girls,” the Facebook event description reads.

“On March 14th, join UVic’s Indigenous Law Students’ Association for a student walkout, protest march around Ring Road, and demonstration in front of the Faculty of Law,” the description continues. “All are welcome. Bring your signs and drums!”

At 11 am, students will walk-out of their classes, gather at Faculty of Law to begin a march around Ring Road and back to the Fraser Building (corner of McGill Road and Ring Road) where a public demonstration will happen at noon.

The Schedule

  • 11am – student walkout
  • 11:15am – march begins at Faculty of Law (Fraser Building, corner of McGill Rd and Ring Road)
  • 12:00pm – arrive back at Fraser Building for demonstration

North Saanich could have a new Costco store by 2019

(Costco at Langford/Google Maps)

A brand new wholesale destination could be coming to Greater Victoria soon.

Sources told Victoria Buzz about the likelihood of a new Costco location – in addition to the existing one in Langford – opening up in North Saanich as early as 2019.

Just last year, there were rumours of a Costco coming to the Saanich Peninsula near Mt. Newton X Road, but ultimately, no such project was undertaken.

This time however the speculation seems to be rooted in facts and figures, according to reliable sources.

Location and ownership

The allegedly soon-to-open Costco will be located on Mills Road.

The land is owned by the Victoria International Airport who leases it out to prospective businesses.

At this time, we have reached out to Victoria International Airport and Costco for comment, but have not heard back in time for publication.

More details to come.

Green Party leader looks to lower provincial voting age to 16

(The Canadian Press)

For the third time in his career, B.C. Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has introduced a bill to try and reduce the provincial voting age to 16.

In a statement, the Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA argued that young British Columbians should be able to have a say in political decisions that impact them.

He referenced countries like Scotland, Argentina, Austria and Brazil that already allow 16 year olds to vote, and how this lower voting age has encouraged more political participation overall.

“Young citizens of British Columbia are old enough to drive, pay taxes and sign up for the military. They are also the leaders of tomorrow,” says Weaver.

“They should have a say in the direction we are heading, as they will inherit what we leave behind. B.C. should take this chance to strengthen our democracy and lower the voting age to 16.”

Click here to sign the petition to support lowering the legal voting age in BC to 16.

Mixed reviews on Twitter

While some people agree with Weaver’s initiative, others have reservations about letting children participate in the voting system, especially those who are not fully informed about politics.

Victoria Police seek suspect in downtown assault case

(Victoria Buzz)

He was described as 5’2″ tall, with a medium build, wearing a blue shirt, brown pants, and carrying a red skateboard.

People who spot someone matching the description in the area are encouraged to call 911 immediately.

Petition to bring BC Ferries under government control gains over 20,000 signatures

Northern Sea Wolf (BC Ferries)

Thousands of people who are dependent on the ferry system have signed a petition to make BC Ferries a part of the province’s Transportation and Highways Ministry.

The online petition with 24,460 supporters was presented to the B.C. Legislature on Monday, after rising concerns about the company’s costs of operation as a Crown corporation.

Bringing B.C. Ferries under the Ministry of Transportation would allow it to be financed by taxpayers all across the province, similar to how highways on land are funded throughout BC.

However, according to CBC, the NDP government is not considering governing the ferry system right now.

They will instead be reviewing the current BC Ferries model to increase accessibility and affordability for people who frequently use the system.

So far, the new provincial government has moved forward with their promise to freeze fares on major BC Ferries routes, reduce rates on minor routes by 15%, and bring back a seniors’ discount.

Comedy of Errors coming to UVic’s Phoenix Theatre… with a twist (CONTEST)

From March 15-24, the University of Victoria’s Phoenix Theatre will showcase Shakespeare’s funniest comedy, but with an original, modern twist.

Inspired by pop music videos, Director Jeffrey Renn has reimagined the play to feature a catalogue of music 20th and 21st-century music.

From Beyoncé and Nina Simone to Sir Mixalot and Queen, this production promises to be unlike any Shakespearean play you’ve seen before.

Connecting an Ancient Play to the Modern World

The Comedy of Errors offers a hilarious, intricately-entangled farce of mistaken identity that was first told in Roman times.

“Given what’s happening in our world today, the old theatre maxim ‘Fascism cries Farce!’ remains apropos,” said Renn. “We need laughter – silly belly laughter – not the sort born out of cynicism”

With the help of Wendell Clanton (UVic Music) writing song adaptations and choreographer Christina Penhale (ExitStageLeft), Shakespeare’s words will be surrounded by song and dance, and provide plenty of fun for the audience.

Songs inspired by:
  • Beyoncé – Single Ladies
  • Black Eyed Peas – Let’s Get it Started

About the Play

The Comedy of Errors tells the story of two sets of twins, separated at birth, who share a name with their sibling and happen to find themselves in the same city. As their two worlds collide, chaos ensues, resolving into a tale of family reunion, love, and self-reflection.

An exceptional creative team will bring both youthful energy and expertise to create a modern-day Mardi Gras party atmosphere setting.

Aidan Dunsmuir’s sound design will fill the auditorium with energy, complemented by Michael Whitfield’s club-style lighting design.

Patrick Du Wors’ set utilizes mirrors to create a timeless, minimalist universe, and costume designer Jivan Bains-Wood highlights the fun and extravagance of the adaptation with colour, glitter, and even glow-in-the-dark costume pieces.

About the Director

Renn’s decision to revamp the Phoenix’s Comedy of Errors came from a desire to share the Bard with the current “iTunes generation”.

After graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, Renn has been involved with Shakespeare – through both acting and directing – in productions ranging from Stratford to Broadway.

“Shakespearean theatre was the music video of his day.”

“We’re adapting Shakespeare’s adaptation of Plautus Menaechmi, a play that is almost two thousand years old,” said Renn. “Proving that our basic humanity really hasn’t changed since Roman times.”

“This play holds up a mirror and asks the question ‘Who am I?'” added Renn. “Young people are still searching for a sense of meaning, a sense of recognition, only now it’s performative – captured and viewed through our devices.”

Migration Boutique moves to new location on Government Street

One of Victoria’s most beloved local stores has just moved out of the Bay Centre and into their own standalone store on Government Street.

After rising in popularity during their time at the Bay Centre, Migration Boutique has just made the leap and moved into their own store at a prime location on Government Street.

With over 65 local artists adding to their unique collection every week, Migration has grown to be one of the most successful local boutiques in town, with visitors coming from all over the mainland to shop there.

They celebrated their opening night at their new store on 1223 Government Street last night with a sale, a DJ, and tons of treats from local eateries like Ruth and Dean.

If you don’t feel like making the trip downtown, Migration has also recently launched their online store on their website, where you can get 20% off on your first order and free shipping over $150.

Happy shopping!

Online petition launched to ensure justice for Duncan dog neglected to death

(BC SPCA)

People on Vancouver Island were heartbroken when they heard about Teddy, the Duncan dog who died after being severely neglected by his owners.

Duncan couple Anderson Joe and Melissa Tooshley were arrested and charged with animal cruelty after Teddy was found tied up with a rope that was only a few inches long, and standing in a pile of mud and feces.

Upon closer inspection, it became evident that his collar had dug deep into his neck, causing severe infection and making his head swell up to two to three times its normal size. Teddy succumbed to his injuries on February 18th, just two days after he was rescued.

Justice for Teddy

Dubbed by the SPCA as “one of the most profoundly shocking and disturbing cases of abuse” they have ever seen, Teddy’s case touched the hearts of everyone who read about it.

This petition to Crown Council and local MLA Doug Routley has therefore been started to hold the owners accountable for their actions, by giving them the maximum penalty possible: five years in prison, a $10,000 fine and a lifetime ban on owning animals.

It has been gaining traction since it’s creation and is currently only 500 signatures short of its 13,000 goal.

Peaceful protest

RainCoast Dog Rescue Society, an organization that works towards the rescue and rehabilitation of neglected and abused dogs, is hosting a peaceful protest at the Duncan courthouse to also demand maximum punishment for Teddy’s owners.

“The lack of proper punishment of these types of abusers has gone on for too long,” reads their statement on Facebook.

“Because the precedents that have been set in previous animal abuse cases similar here on Vancouver Island have been deplorable and way too lenient.”

Anderson Joe and Melissa Tooshley are set to appear at the Duncan courthouse for their next court date on April 3rd, 2018.

We wanted to update everyone on the horrific case of animal abuse in the Cowichan Valley that we posted about yesterday…

Local pet-owners seek help finding missing 3-year-old dog in East Sooke (UPDATED)

Update: Olly has been found!

Earlier: Victoria Buzz reader Kloe Naomi reached out to us after her dog, Olive or “Olly” wandered away this morning.

Olly was last seen at the Becher Bay and East Sooke Rd intersection near Aylard farm, when she took off after getting frightened by the sounds of shooting from a nearby driving range.

The little three-year-old dog was wearing a collar when she ran out of the owners’ yard at around 11 AM this morning, leaving everyone extremely worried.

If you’re in the area and think you’ve spotted Olly, please give her family a call at 250-508-2063 or 778-425-0188.

Man calls on City to fix slippery grates in downtown Victoria (VIDEO)

Picture this: you’re walking up Yates Street, heading over to the Odeon to catch the latest Star Wars movie.

It’s a typical drizzly Victoria afternoon, the streets are soaked, and you’re rushing to get out of the cold wetness. But suddenly, you feel your feet give away on one of those large steel grates and before you know it, you’re on the ground clutching your hip in pain.

Sound familiar?

Unfortunately, one visitor from Windsor, Ontario found out the hard way what many Victorians already know: if you step on the slippery, wet grates on the Yates Street sidewalk, you’re at risk of “doing the splits”.

Victor Green created a video narrating his experience on Yates Street, and calls on the City of Victoria to do get rid of the safety hazard.

As of now, the city’s public works department has been notified of the concern and will respond with a statement sometime next week.
