RCMP are issuing a warning to pet owners after a family cat was shot in the Deep Cove area of North Saanich Monday evening.

At 8 p.m., when Frankie hadn’t come in, Halkett went looking for the cat and found her hiding and injured in a van. After visiting the veterinarian it was discovered that Frankie had been shot by what is believed to be a .22 calibre firearm.

The cat underwent surgery today which involved amputating one of her legs due to the severity of damage cause by the shot.

The shooting shooting occurred in the area of Baxendale Road.

Downtown Victoria book store announces major sale for its last day on August 15th

Tomorrow is the last day for visitors to peruse the shelves at Books on View, a fixture of View Street in downtown Victoria.

For years, Books on View has served as a secondary location for Russell Books on Fort Street, but its owners will be closing the store to the public after its last day on Thursday, August 15th.

Co-owner Andrea Minter tells Victoria Buzz that the company plans to keep the space occupied by Books on View and use it as a warehouse to store inventory.

There’s still time to say goodbye, however.

For its last day, the View St bookstore is having a major buy-one-get-one-free sale valid on everything in-store.

The countdown to check out our Books-on-View Clearance Sale is on! The last day to check it out is August 15th

New location for Russell Books

Earlier this summer, Russell Books announced that it would be moving to a new location just across the street at 747 Fort Street.

While the owners had originally planned to complete the transition by the end of the summer, they now expect to finish moving everything over by October.

“We have lots of things in the works for the new space, as well as lots of new products, titles, and brands coming in,” Minter tells Victoria Buzz.

“We’ve already started moving a lot of our product, and the vintage section is having a blowout sale as well.”

This transition is a massive expansion for the business, as the new store measures18,000 sq. ft. – that’s 6,000 sq. ft more space than their current location.

The staff at Russell Books plan to execute the move without shutting down the business, and Minter adds that more sales are on the way for the main store as well.

Russell Books first opened in downtown Victoria in 1991 when founder Reg Russell expanded his Montreal operation and brought it to the city.

Today, it is the single largest independent bookstore operator in downtown Victoria and offers a massive variety of literature, covering every inch of the store from floor to ceiling.

BC wants licensed cannabis suppliers to pitch edible product designs ahead of legalization

(File photo)

The BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is inviting licensed cannabis producers to pitch non-medical edible product designs.

The open call for edible cannabis products comes ahead of edible legalization in Canada, which is set to happen in December 2019.

Interested suppliers must demonstrate that they have researched their designs and can consistently supply the LDB with legal products like edibles, beverages, topicals, extracts, and more.

“This product call marks an exciting time for the LDB as we work toward introducing new product categories into B.C.’s legal cannabis market,” said Blain Lawson, general manager and CEO of the LDB in a statement.

“We are currently working with over 30 licensed producers and look forward to engaging with new suppliers to expand our wholesale product assortment.”

Products selected by the province will be available in both government-run BC Cannabis Stores and licensed private retailers by the end of the year.

The province’s open product call begins on Thursday, August 15th, 2019, and closes on September 11th, 2019.

Cannabis producers are being reminded that they must provide Health Canada at least 60 days notice before a product can be made available for sale.

Further details about the LDB’s open product call can be found online here.

Two teenage boys from Port Alberni were arrested by RCMP on Monday after destroying a series of historic train cars from the “Alberni Pacific Railway” Roundhouse.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Port Alberni RCMP were called to the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society for reports of two youths rampaging through two train passenger coaches.

According to the heritage society’s Facebook page, the “destructive rampage” included smashing every single window in the two passenger cars, discharging fire extinguishers inside the historic trains, and “making a general mess.”

When officers arrived, they quickly located the teens near the train cars.

“The two teenage boys are under 18,” Cpl. Jordan Hamlyn, Port Alberni RCMP, told Victoria Buzz.

“Both have been charged with mischief.”

The estimated value of damage will be calculated by the heritage society, said the RCMP, though the total value has yet to be determined.

However, the heritage society did say that “it is going to take a lot of work to replace the windows and repair the damage.”

Victoria Buzz has reached out to the Western Vancouver Island Industrial Heritage Society for comment.

This Victoria Buzz follower created a hilarious Bingo card about our comment sections

(Photo: Victoria Buzz)

If you’ve spent any time on the Victoria Buzz Facebook page, you may have noticed a trend in some of the comments below our articles.

Yeah, that’s right – we see all those bike lane jokes and traffic rants.

But one follower decided to take it one step further and jump on the Bingo card bandwagon by creating one about the types of comments on our Facebook page.

While some of these squares are so real, they make us want to turn this Bingo into a drinking game, we can’t argue with Dan Smart’s hilarious creation:

(Created by Dan Smart)

Smart has been following Victoria Buzz for a little less than a year and quickly noticed how consistently some of our followers react to articles about our beautiful city.

“I love making memes, I have free time… and I wanted to shine a light on some of the more annoying/ignorant comments,” said Smart.

“People just hide behind their computers and post anywhere from absolute nonsense to blatantly racist comments, they don’t seem to realize they have their name attached to it on Facebook.”

According to this self-proclaimed ‘seasoned memelord’, the Bingo card took him just 15 minutes to draw up and even includes a square about himself “commenting about lizard people” (see bottom right corner).

“I feel like the mayor of Victoria is a very thankless job, and a lot of people place blame on Lisa Helps or the Council for things that are really just common sense civic enhancements/maintenance/ infrastructure upgrades etc…,” says Smart.

“And I like to take blaming them for things that aren’t their fault one step further by suggesting that they all have ulterior motives, ie the literal uprising of the subterranean lizard people.”

Talking about lizard people is his way of discrediting conspiracy theorists by taking outlandish arguments one step further, explains Smart.

But whether you can spot yourself in that Bingo card (it’s okay to admit it) or just get a kick out of reading the comments, everyone’s welcome to share their views on our articles.

Just remember to keep it classy, Victoria!

Victoria’s newest licensed cannabis dispensary opens this Saturday

(Clarity Cannabis Gorge Road East location / Clarity Cannabis Instagram)

With unlicensed cannabis dispensaries closing across the city, Victoria is set to open its 6th legal private cannabis retailer this weekend.

Opening on Saturday morning, the new dispensary will be Clarity Cannabis’ second storefront in Victoria, and will be located at 855 Johnson Street.

To celebrate the branch’s grand opening, Clarity Cannabis will be giving away free merch to the first 50 people who walk through their door, regardless of whether or not they make a purchase.

This includes shirts, matches, pens, and “potentially hats”, according to the company.

Clarity Cannabis is just one of three cannabis businesses in Victoria that have been granted a license to sell marijuana products by the province.

The other businesses include Cloud Nine — which has a location on Fort Street — and the Original Farm — which has two locations, one on Douglas Street and one on Scott Street.

The opening of Clarity Cannabis’ second location comes roughly two weeks after the provincial government shut down a number of unlicensed cannabis retailers across Victoria, including all 7 Trees Island Grown stores.

On the same day that the province carried out their raids, BC opened its first government cannabis retail store on Vancouver Island.

For now, people looking to purchase some legal weed can visit the grand opening of Clarity Cannabis and score some free merch this Saturday, August 17th!

Vancouver Island emu tasered by police after escaping local farm (PHOTO/VIDEO)

(Image / Cherry Winia Facebook)

An emu that escaped from a Vancouver Island farm was tasered by police on Tuesday after it became aggressive towards officers in the Chemainus area.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP patrol officers spotted an emu on the loose on Chemainus Road.

The 5’ 7”, approximately 100 lbs emu had apparently escaped from a nearby farm and was causing traffic to slow to a crawl.

To retrieve the scampering flightless bird, officers contacted Coastal Animal Control for assistance and blocked traffic on Chemainus Road in both directions while they attempted to calm the emu.

However, the large bird quickly became aggressive towards the attending officers. RCMP then came up with a plan with Coastal Animal Control Officers and, in order to protect everyone involved, decided to use a taser to subdue the animal.

The taser was effective in bringing down the emu, which was then transported back to its owner at the nearby farm it escaped from.

Police say the flightless bird was uninjured in the incident.

“Our primary concern is always safety… not only to the public and to our officers, but also to animals,” said Sgt. Chris Swain, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

“We are pleased that officers were able to maintain public safety while using as little force as necessary towards the aggressive emu to ensure its safe return to a nearby farm.”

Police identify persons of interest in murder of 60-year-old Metchosin man

(Martin Payne / Facebook)

West Shore RCMP have identified persons of interest in the course of their investigation of the murder of 60-year-old Martin Payne.

Payne was found deceased in his home on Friday, July 12th, and his death has been ruled suspicious.

See also:

In a recent update, RCMP shared that they have identified persons of interest in the case, and that there is no threat to the public in Greater Victoria.

“We cannot discuss Mr. Payne’s murder in detail as this is an active investigation. The investigative team continues to work hard at gathering evidence to support charges against those responsible for his homicide,” stated Staff Sergeant Raj Sandhu, Operations NCO at the West Shore RCMP.

Although no further details about suspects have been disclosed, police are seeking public assistance in identifying the owner of a backpack that was recovered by investigators on July 9th.

It is a navy blue backpack with large beige lettering on the front identifying the brand as Journeys by Jerry Van Dyke. Pictured below:

Saanich Police seek suspect after 31-year-old woman assaulted in Rutledge Park

(Google Maps)

Saanich Police are searching for a suspect who assaulted a 31-year-old woman in Rutledge Park last month.

The victim in question was a Victoria Buzz staff member who was walking home through Rutledge Park at 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 18th.

See also:

As she made her way across, the unknown man wrapped his arms around her upper body from behind. He released her when she kicked her legs back at him and, without a word, fled the park towards Cloverdale Ave.

The victim, who has chosen to withhold her name, stayed in the park until police arrived with a K9 team and searched the area.

“I felt arms around my upper body and he pinned my arms down. I tried to shrug him off and struggle out but I couldn’t get my arms loose, so my immediate reaction was to kick backwards,” she said.

“Police said a dog was able to track a scent all the way to the Uptown area before the scent dropped off, which the constable said could mean that either the suspect got into a vehicle or into a residence.”

She was physically uninjured and has received Victim Services support.

The suspect, however, remains unidentified.

“I should feel comfortable in a well-lit park…”

He is described as a Caucasian man, standing 6’0″ to 6’3″ tall, with a skinny build, messy hair, and scruffy facial hair.

At the time of the incident, he was wearing dark pants, and a Mexican-style knit blanket sweater with black and grey stripes.

“I was very curious as to what he was after. I had my cell phone in my hand and was wearing my purse and he didn’t touch either of those things,” said the victim.

“Right now, I mostly just want people to be aware that it happened because it shouldn’t happen to anybody else and I should be able to feel comfortable in a well-lit park a block away from my home. I’ve always felt safe in that area before.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

(Image / McDonald's Instagram)

Calling all burger lovers and discount lovers!

From today until Monday, August 19th, McDonald’s is selling their newly designed Big Mac burgers for just $3 across Canada.

The discount is being offered to celebrate the company’s revamped line of classic beef burgers, like their Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, and Cheeseburger.

According to an announcement made by the fast food giant last week, Mcdonald’s burgers made in Canada will now use fresher ingredients and feature a different cooking procedure.

Some of the most significant cooking process changes include using 100% Canadian beef patties – that will now be grilled in smaller batches – and adding onions directly to the patties during cooking for increased flavour, as well as using new buns that will be heated to order.

“We’re making a number of small changes to our burgers that add up to one big taste difference for our guests,” said Nicola Pitman, Director of Menu Innovation and Management, McDonald’s Canada in a statement.

“These improvements will not only result in hotter, juicier and tastier burgers that are cooked to perfection, but also showcase our ongoing commitment to ensuring Canadians get the best burger every time they visit McDonald’s.”

Oak Bay Police release photo of ‘person of interest’ in UVic break and enters

(Image / Oak Bay Police Twitter)

Oak Bay Police have released a photo of a man believed to be a ‘person of interest’ in two separate break and enters at the University of Victoria earlier this year.

In both cases, computer equipment was stolen from the campus, with the first break and enter being reported on January 2nd while the second theft was reported on April 23rd

See also:

In the January incident, police believe that the thief committed the crime several days before the report was received while most students and staff were away on holidays.

“There were two separate B&Es, one in January and one in April,” Deputy Chief Constable Ray Beronties told Victoria Buzz.

“The one that occurred over the Christmas holiday season was reported on January 2nd, but is believed to have occurred over the Christmas break.”

With a photograph of the person of interest now released, police have turned to the community to help identify the man.

“At this time we haven’t been able to identify him as a student but we have not ruled that out,” said Beronties. “ It’s possible he was dressed as UVic student to blend in or was a former student.”

“We’re confident someone will see his picture and be able to identify him and contact us or Crime Stoppers.”

Anyone with information on the man is asked to call Oak Bay Police at 250-592-2424 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

A new state-of-the-art MRI machine was just installed at Victoria’s Royal Jubilee Hospital

(Image / Island Health Facebook)

A brand new state-of-the-art MRI machine was just installed in Victoria’s Royal Jubilee Hospital this weekend.

The new 3T MRI scanner — which features a 17,000-pound magnet and is double the magnetic strength of current MRI machines — was lifted by crane into the Royal Jubilee on Saturday.

MRI’s (magnetic resonance imaging) are machines that help diagnose a range of medical conditions, like brain abnormalities, tumors, cysts, soft-tissue injuries, and more.

See also:

“Royal Jubilee Hospital has just received a new 3T MRI scanner!” said Island Health on Facebook.

“It has two times the magnetic strength of current MRI scanners in operation, and will help diagnose complex conditions such as neurological disease, heart disease, and prostate cancer, enhancing the quality of care for our patients.”

The installation comes just two weeks after the province announced that construction of a new MRI had begun at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

The medical machine in Nanaimo is expected to dramatically reduce wait times for medical examinations throughout central Vancouver Island once it’s fully operational in Spring 2020.

Meanwhile, in mid-July, the province announced the construction of the first ever PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography) scanner suite for cancer treatment on the island.

The state-of-the art $6.5 million facility will open in Victoria’s BC Cancer centre, and will help cancer patients receive care closer to home, rather than having to travel to Vancouver for scans.

Island Health opens first dedicated injectable opioid site in downtown Victoria

(Image / Island Health)

A new injectable opioid treatment program has officially opened its doors in downtown Victoria to help people living with chronic opioid addiction.

The Injectable Opioid Agonist Treatment (iOAT) is the first of its kind on Vancouver Island, and is intended to increase the safety of both users and the broader community at large.

“Everyone deserves to be supported in finding their own unique pathway to hope and a pathway to healing,” said Mental Health and Addictions Minister Judy Darcy in a statement.

“For some people that includes medication-assisted treatments like iOAT. Adding this life-saving treatment option in Victoria means more people will be able to find the help they need when they need it.”

See also:

The iOAT will provide people with daily supervised injections in a clinical setting to help protect the health and safety of users. Without opioids, people living with an Opioid Use Disorder will experience serious withdrawal symptoms, including severe pain and nausea.

The program will operate out of the Johnson Street Supervised Consumption Service and start with a capacity of six people before eventually expanding to a capacity of 20 people

Besides the new iOAT program, the Johnson Street Supervised Consumption Service also offers referrals to mental health counselling, links to an on-site primary care clinic, contacts to social and housing support, and referrals to substance use treatment programs.

“Addiction is a chronic illness, and it needs to be treated with all of the tools at our disposal,” said Dr. Richard Stanwick, Chief Medical Health Officer at Island Health in a statement.

“iOAT is an effective treatment for chronic opioid addiction, and is one more way we can address overdose deaths.”

McKenzie interchange project may cause closures on the Galloping Goose Trail

Galloping Goose
Galloping Goose Regional Trail (CRD)

Cyclists and pedestrians who frequent the Galloping Goose Trail are being warned of possible night closures due to construction of the McKenzie interchange highway project.

Starting today until November 5th, 2019, closures may occur overnight on the trail as commuters near the project. According to the ministry, the closures will only occur between 8:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. to avoid peak trail hours.

Additionally, the trail will never be closed on Sundays or holidays.

If the trail is closed, the province recommends detouring to Burnside Road between Belgrave Road and the Burnside bridge.

Should a trail closure become necessary, the province will display “highly visible” orange signs along the Galloping Goose to warn cyclists of an upcoming closure.

The potential closures are part of the landscaping, topsoil placement, and other projects related to the McKenzie interchange project.

Central Saanich Police are looking for any witnesses who may have seen a vehicle collision involving two cars on Keating Cross Road Monday night.

According to police, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Keating Cross Road and Central Saanich Road.

The crash involved a Mazda RX8 and a grey Chevy Uplander, which is the vehicle that rolled over onto its roof.

Police say that the drivers of both vehicles were transported to hospital following the collision. Neither are suspected of being impaired by alcohol at the time.

Police are reaching out to the community for possible witnesses after both drivers told officers that they believed they were crossing the intersection on a green light.

“The main reason we’re looking for witnesses here is that both parties believe they went through on a green light and that’s just not possible,” Sgt. Cole Braley, Central Saanich Police, told Victoria Buzz.

“Someone’s mistaken so we’re hoping that someone went by or that someone has a dashcam that recorded the incident.”

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Central Saanich Police at 250-652-4441.

SPCA launches investigation after cat shot 5 times with pellet gun in Nanaimo

(Mystic / BC SPCA)

A cat from Nanaimo who suffered a number of broken bones after being repeatedly shot by a pellet gun is looking to make a dramatic recovery after community members raised money to cover his veterinarian fees.

The cat, Mystic, suffered a shattered tibia and fibula, and pellets were found lodged in his abdomen, ventral lumbar region, front leg, ribs and near his spine.

Mystic’s painful history was shared by the BC SPCA’s Nanaimo & District Branch on Tuesday in an appeal to the community to help cover the costs of his health treatments.

At the time of publication, people had raised $15,804 for the injured cat, over 10 times the SPCA’s originally goal of $1,600.

The additional funds raised will go towards treating other animals under the BC SPCA’s care.

“Mystic is a shy guy, who has been through a traumatic experience that has caused him a bit of anxiety,” said SPCA Nanaimo & District branch manager Leon Davis in a statement.

“With surgery and continued healing hopefully he will be relieved from his discomfort and be able to feel like a calm happy cat again.”

Mystic will be put up for adoption in about a month, once he recovers.

To support other injured animals like Mystic, you can visit the BC SPCA’s medical emergency page.

Mayor Lisa Helps “delighted” with ‘messy’ intersections caused by increased pedestrian traffic

bike lane

With downtown Victoria’s bike lane network continuing to expand, some residents have turned to social media to voice their frustration, which has prompted interesting responses from Mayor Lisa Helps.

“Took me almost 20 minutes in a car to get 5 blocks down Wharf from Pandora. Frightening- pedestrians and bikes everywhere!” said one Victoria resident on Twitter.

“Horrible experience. What a terrible mess!”

See also:

In response to this frustrated driver’s experience, Mayor Helps replied to the tweet saying “I personally love the ‘messiness’ of all those pedestrians and bikes!”

https://twitter.com/lisahelps/status/1160398333120147456?fbclid=IwAR03Ua_AaQ7hUd3-7J9vVG_XEPOSP-_lViLsmx9fi13Bu3LEgPb23hQ8w_E

The reply has caused some controversy in the community, dividing vehicle commuters and pedestrians.

“The less people dragging their personal, climate controlled, 2-ton, 200 horsepower, livingroom on wheels into urban centers, the better,” said one Twitter user, Emily Montgomery.

“Yes, and the ‘messiness’ it’s really, really great for the visually impaired and pedestrians with limited mobility,” replied another user, dotmackenzie. “Way to go inclusive Victoria!”

“That’s what cities of the future look like…”

When asked about the concerns some residents had about increasingly busy intersections, Mayor Lisa Helps told Victoria Buzz that despite growing pains, the busier pedestrian and bicycle traffic are a positive step for the future of the city.

“There are hordes of people who are now walking through Wharf Street and I think that’s fantastic,” she said.

“I was actually delighted to see that Wharf Street has come alive and all we did was change the traffic patterns a little bit. I think it’s actually quite exciting.”

According to Helps, while pedestrian safety may be an issue, the community’s ability to adapt to traffic pattern changes should not be underestimated.

“Hospitalization of pedestrians due to conflict is higher than it’s been in the past 10 years, but pedestrians are the most vulnerable in safety incidents,” she said.

“Everyone needs to be more careful, including people on bicycles and people in cars.”

With the newest stretch of protected bike lane opening on Wharf Street on August 2nd, Victoria is showing no signs of slowing down its infrastructure projects.

“That’s what cities of the future look like around the world, and we’re a small powerhouse leading change in North America,” said Helps.

RCMP confirm bodies found in Manitoba were those of Port Alberni murder suspects

(Bryer Schmegelsky (left) Kam McLeod (right) / BC RCMP)

RCMP confirmed Monday that the two bodies found near Gillam, Manitoba last week were those of Port Alberni teens and murder suspects Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmegelsky.

The Manitoba Medical Examiner says the pair died in an apparent “suicide by gunfire.”

Two firearms were located near their bodies, roughly 8 kilometres away from where the pair’s burnt RAV4 vehicle was discovered.

While police have not determined an exact time of death, investigators believe that they were deceased “for a number of days” before their remains were discovered.

That being said, officials believe the pair were likely alive for a number of days after the manhunt for them began near Gillam in late July.

McLeod, 19, and Schmegelsky, 18, were charged with second-degree murder in the death of Leonard Dyck. They were also wanted in the murder of a young tourist couple – Australian Lucas Fowler and American Chynna Deese.

Investigators are reviewing all of the evidence and information collected in order to determine what happened to the three victims.

Police say they will review all investigative findings to date, compile statements, timelines, physical and digital evidence, and more, with the support of BC RCMP.

“The BC RCMP commits that once we have completed that review within the next few weeks, we will be providing the families with an update with respect to the totality of the investigations and then releasing the information publicly.” the organization said in a statement.

The dazzling Perseid meteor shower is happening over Vancouver Island TONIGHT

It’s almost time for the brightest, most prominent meteor shower of the year!

The Perseid meteor shower will be lighting up the night sky once again on the night of August 12th and 13th.

But this year, NASA says the usually spectacular stellar show may be out-shined by a close-to-full moon during their peak.

See also:

“The best known meteors of the year, the Perseids, are back. But…this year’s shower will have to contend with a bright Moon on the peak nights. Still, you could see a dozen or more meteors per hour, including the occasional very bright meteor, also called a fireball,” writes the space agency.

This year, the best time to view the show will be in the last hours before dawn on the mornings of August 12th and 13th.

Because the moon will nearly be full, the best chance to see the meteors will be when the moon is low in the west, or the brief period after it sets.

Visibility may be further limited by clouds since, as of the time of publication, cloudy nights are in the forecast for Victoria on August 12th and 13th.

“For the best meteor watching, face toward the east and look up. The Perseids generally appear to radiate from a point here, a bit to the left of the Pleiades star cluster, but they can appear pretty much anywhere on the sky,” says NASA.

Happy stargazing!

Police searching for two men who attempted to rob women at Carnarvon Park in Oak Bay

(Image / Google Maps)

Oak Bay Police are searching for two male suspects after a group of women were nearly robbed in Carnarvon Park last week.

On Friday, at approximately 1 a.m., police were called to the park for reports of an attempted robbery.

The victims, three women, said they were walking through the park when they were approached by two men who had their lower faces covered and were wearing dark-coloured hoodies.

One of the men then demanded the womens’ wallets and money. The three women attempted to walk away before one of the men tried to stop them.

Police say that the women managed to walk past both men though a red laser pointer was aimed at them while one man was believed to be holding an “unknown object”.

The women then left the park, and police say that “the females were not injured in any way.”

After the incident was reported, officers swarmed the area and performed an extensive search, though no suspects were located.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Oak Bay Police Department at 250-592-2424.

Victoria police arrest man after barricading himself inside a stranger’s home

(Victoria Buzz stock images)

A Victoria man was arrested this weekend after he barricaded himself inside a stranger’s home, causing a prolonged police standoff.

On Saturday, at approximately 10:00 p.m., VicPD was called to the 1100-block of Yates Street for reports of a man inside a suite of an apartment building.

The property owners told police that they did not know who the man was, and that he was allegedly causing “extensive damage” to the unit.

VicPD then dispatched officers and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team, which includes crisis negotiators to the scene. Once police arrived, however, the man refused to exit the suite and began barricading himself inside.

With the man entrenched in the suite, crisis negotiators began speaking to him over a “portable public address system”.

After a few hours at a standstill, police obtained a warrant and entered the suite, taking the man safely into custody.

No injuries were reported throughout the incident and the man is facing several charges, including mischief.

The investigation is ongoing.

Beaver Lake closed to swimming after algae bloom detected

(VisitorInVictoria)

People hoping to go swimming at Beaver Beach at Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park this weekend may have to put the fun on hold as it has been closed to swimmers after a bloom of blue-green algae was detected in the water.

The CRD is closing the lake for swimming as a precaution until test results determining the presence of toxins are returned from the lab.

Visitors are advised to avoid swimming at Beaver Lake and to keep animals on a leash to prevent them from drinking or swimming in the lake.

The algae usually produce a visible blue-green sheen, which appears as surface scum. However, not all blooms are easy to see, and toxins can still be present in the water even if you cannot see the algal blooms.

Algal blooms are unpredictable and may occur at any time, although blooms most typically occur over the winter months from November to March. These algae are known toxin producers and these compounds have been detected previously at Elk and Beaver Lake.

Ingesting water containing the blue-green algae may cause a range of symptoms, including headaches and abdominal pain in humans, and can lead to lethal liver damage in dogs.

Saturday night fireworks highlight possible record-breaking weekend for playoff-bound Harbourcats

(Victoria Harbourcats)

The Victoria HarbourCats are entering their final weekend of the regular season tonight, chasing at least a pair of West Coast League attendance records.

They are also looking forward to their third trip to the playoffs, beginning Tuesday night in Wenatchee, Washington, and with games scheduled for Wednesday and then Thursday if necessary in Victoria next week.

Coming off a three-game sweep of the Port Angeles Lefties last night in Washington State, both teams will head back to Victoria today and play another three game set here at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park tonight (Friday) and Saturday night, as well as Sunday afternoon.

Saturday night’s game, with a 6:35 p.m. start time, will feature a post-game fireworks display. It’s at that game that the team hopes to set a new single-game attendance record, with over 5,000 fans in the stands.

The second record the HarbourCats are aiming to set is the new single-season attendance mark. Going into this weekend’s trio of games, 53,446 fans have visited the ballpark this summer so far. A strong showing at the turnstiles this weekend will help the team eclipse the league-record 62,599 that they set just last year. That number last year landed the HarbourCats at #9 on the North American list of summer collegiate squads, in a field of over 200 teams.

Friday night’s game is the last “Forces Friday” of the season, and will include a drone demonstration by the Victoria Fire Department, and an opportunity for fans to win “jerseys off their backs” – game-worn jerseys directly from the players.

Sunday’s 1:00pm afternoon game is fan appreciation day, with extra fan prizes added into the usual mix.

Victoria man films orca swimming through inner harbour Friday morning (PHOTOS/VIDEO)

(Image / Mark Dayton)

Marine traffic in Victoria’s inner harbour was temporarily halted today after a killer whale was spotted swimming through the city’s waters.

The rare encounter was captured around 10:00 a.m. Friday morning Tim Bieber, who uploaded a video to Facebook.

According to Bieber, ships and float planes were told to slow down and wait for the orca to pass, a serious request that was accompanied by flashing lights on a police vessel in the harbour.

The orca “shut [down] the entire airspace of float planes and held ferries while he hunted!” said Bieber in his video caption.

“Epic timing and experience!”

While spotting orcas near downtown Victoria truly is rare, a similar encounter occurred in the summer of 2018, when a small pod of orcas accompanied low tide into the harbour.

Victoria’s Japanese Village Restaurant is now selling their famous Sesame Sauce

(Image / Submitted)

Victoria’s Japanese Village Restaurant has just begun selling take-home containers of their legendary Sesame Sauce.

The announcement was made by the teppanyaki restaurant’s Facebook page today, and warns customers that quantities of the sauce will be extremely limited.

“The sauce is available while quantities last each day, because they’re made fresh daily,” Japanese Village staff told Victoria Buzz.

As the Sesame Sauce is made from fresh ingredients, it must be refrigerated and used within three days of purchasing, according to the restaurant.

Hungry Victorians can pick up the sauce in 8 oz. containers for $9.50 from Japanese Village’s downtown location.

The restaurant notes that the sauce containers are fully compostable, so that the packaging has minimal environmental impact.

If the teppanyaki restaurant is already sold out of their secret sauce by the time you arrive, don’t worry, you can still pick up a to-go bowl of rice covered in Sesame Sauce for $3.33 before tax.

Rain is expected to fall over Victoria this entire weekend

(File photo)

With clouds covering most of Victoria’s sky today, the City of Gardens is expected to receive rainfall all weekend, possibly starting tonight.

According to Environment Canada, showers could begin Friday night – with a 30% chance of rain.

On Saturday, the chance of showers increases to a whopping 70% during the day followed by 60% in the evening.

Come Sunday, the weather agency expects a 60% chance of rain during the day. By Sunday night, most of the rain is expected to have cleared, with a slim 30% chance of rain occurring on Monday.

The rainfall is good news for the city, which has been experiencing a drier than usual summer season.

On June 27th, Victoria broke a decades-old weather-record for highest amount of rainfall received in the city in just one day. However, the entire month was still drier than the yearly average overall.

Dine in Victoria closing for good after 20 years of delivering in the city

(Image / Dine In Victoria Instagram)

Decades-old local business, Dine In Victoria, announced on Thursday that it is shuttering its delivery service for good starting today.

First launched in 1999, the food delivery service grew to over 35 employees and a range of loyal customers across the city.

However, since a number of international competitors have expanded into Victoria — like Skip the Dishes and Uber Eats — the local business had difficulty keeping pace.

“We’ve loved serving Victorians and it’s sad for a lot of us for sure,” Dine In Victoria owner Maggie Rideout told Victoria Buzz.

“But I think it’s just the way times are going with the big delivery services. They have a lot of financial backing to expand rapidly.”

When the food delivery service first started 20 years ago, the business model was “ahead of its time,” said Rideout.

“It was hard breaking into the market because people were just not really aware of what that delivery was.”

“I think people were used to free pizza delivery so they weren’t quite ready for a delivery fee. It was quite ahead of its time.”

Since 1999, however, personal food delivery has become mainstream, and Dine In Victoria is grateful for the customers and staff that supported them, since the last millennium until now.

“We’ve loved serving Victorians, they’re very kind people,” said Rideout.

“We’ve actually had some very dedicated customers who refused to use the other services. The outpouring today and last night was incredible.”

Thetis Lake swarmed by RCMP after woman brandishes replica handgun

(Image / West Shore RCMP)

Two people were arrested at Thetis Lake Thursday morning after West Shore RCMP received reports of a woman walking into the park with a replica handgun.

On August 8, at approximately 7:35 a.m., police were called to the park for reports of a woman holding a handgun in the 2000-block of Gourman Place.

Officers were told she was with a man and were seen walking into the park.

RCMP then responded with a “heavy police presence” and began to search the park’s trail network.

Officers were positioned at the trail exits to ensure the suspects could not leave, and hikers already in the park were redirected to leave the area safely.

“Thetis Lake Regional Park is a huge area with lots of foot traffic and multiple off shooting trails,” said Cst. Nancy Saggar, West Shore RCMP.

“Our officers had a starting point of where the suspects were last seen but we needed to make sure the exits were covered. This required the coordination of numerous police officers at multiple places in and out of the park.”

The suspects were located at about 8 a.m. and were taken into custody without incident.

During the arrest, officers located the replica handgun from the man’s waistband, and determined that it was not a real firearm.

“This is not the first time West Shore RCMP officers have been called to a scene with a report of a gun that was later determined to be a replica,” said the detachment in a statement.

See also:

“These situations present a real risk to both public and police safety. If you are handling a firearm, real or otherwise, in a manner that presents a threat to public safety, the police will respond accordingly and you may find yourself arrested and the subject of a criminal investigation.”

Police say the investigation into the two Thetis Lake suspects is ongoing.

BC Ferries releases results of what passengers want for future vessels (REPORT)

(Image / Kurt Penner Twitter)

Many BC Ferries passengers are looking for improved Wi-fi, expanded pet areas, and more food choices, according to the latest round of community feedback.

In March, BC Ferries launched an online survey inviting the public to share their input on how to design their 5 new vessels.

The survey focused on nine topic areas: accessibility, pedestrians and cyclists, pet spaces, outdoor spaces, food and beverage, family spaces, new amenities, technology, environmental sustainability, and future flexibility.

In total, over 11,300 British Columbians took the survey, with the main requests being for more space and amenities for pet owners, improved Wi-fi connection, more fresh food options.

Passengers were also interested in improved bicycle storage, more ‘quiet areas’ away from noise and technology, and a wider range of seating options.

“We’re excited about how many customers participated in these conversations and the ideas we heard on how we can improve their experience while travelling with us,” said Mark Collins, BC Ferries’ President and CEO in a statement.

“We look forward to taking the feedback we heard, along with the results from our technical studies, to inform the design requirements for these new ferries.”

The community feedback collected by the transportation organization will be used to help build at least four new vessels for the BC Ferries fleet, which will be used to replace four currently used ships.

The four ships being replaced are the Queen of New Westminster, Queen of Alberni, Queen of Coquitlam, and Queen of Cowichan, which all service Vancouver Island – Metro Vancouver Routes.

The upcoming replacement vessels, which are expected to enter service in the mid 2020s, will likely increase capacity along these popular routes, according to BC Ferries.

With the first round of public engagement now completed, BC Ferries plans to launch a second survey later this year. The next round of feedback will focus on environmental sustainability and vessel flexibility for accommodating future travel demands.

Further information about BC Ferries’ public engagements and upcoming vessels can be found online here.
